Captivate 3: Open PDF in Reader not Browser

Hi,

I finally got a hold of Captivate at work, only to be saddled with a somewhat older version 3... So sorry for dredging up old software...

I'm trying to open a local PDF in reader instead of in a browser and I'm just not JS savvy enough to come up with a solution, or understand how to trouble shoot the apparent solutions I've found on the Internet when they don't work. My project has to run as a standalone on a very limited system in a public workshop environment (no network or Internet access etc. hence trying to keep the user out of the browser.)

Trying to get the PDF form to save to a local drive and with a time-stamp is another issue...

...But first, does anyone have a beginners solution to getting the PDF open in Reader?

Thanks.

    Hi, thanks for the tip.

The results: I turned off the open in browser feature in both acrobat pro and reader and kept having both Firefox and IE trying to open PDFs in the browser. Hunted down some processes that were starting automatically and uninstalled reader and now Firefox always asks where to download a PDF. Which I guess is closer to the desired effect though I wish it would just open the file, as it is local with an absolut file path. IE still tries to open PDFs in the browser. I've deaktivated all the Adobe plugins and addons and still to no avail. I tested links on websites and the links in my project to compare and the results are the same so far. I'm wondering if it is some strange combination of settings on my computer.

I'll be tossing this over to the Acrobat forums as suggested above but wanted to let you know how my first attempts went in case y'all have additional ideas. At least the behavior has changed in the proper direction, at least with Firefox.

    Welcome to our community

I stand to be corrected on this but I don't believe you have a choice. As I understand it, whether the PDF opens in the standalone reader or in the browser is dependent upon how it has been configured for each installation. That means each PC is likely to be different.

I might suggest you ask this question over in the Acrobat forums to confirm. I might think the question you would want to ask is this: I'm linking to a PDF from a Web Page. Can I force it to open in the reader application instead of the browser?

    Hi Rick,

Thanks for the advice. It's gotten me a little closer because now I'm searching in the right places, I think. I've posted my initial though not successful results with my reply to mHenderson below.

I'll update again if I get any further.

    Thanks again.
