Captivate 4--Anyone have approximate dates?

I would like to know if anyone has heard about an approximate release date for Captivate 4 and what enhancements it is likely to contain. What I have been able to discern from a trail copy of Captivate 3 is that it does not contain a few features I need such as "Zoom and Pan." The addition of this to its fourth iteration would prompt me to take a serious look at purchasing Captivate.

With thanks,
Linneaus

I asked this same question at the ASTD conference last month and the sales staff there didn't know any dates for the reasons mentioned above. They generally agreed, however, there would be a new release in a simliar time frame as in the past. Am I right in remembering the other releases have been in the August/September time frame?

    Hi there

According to my records, Captivate 3 was announced by Adobe on July 23, 2007. The trial became available about a week later. July 30, 2007.

To my knowledge, no new version is imminent. I'd be totally surprised if Adobe were to make any announcement about a new version this month. Probably would be best to keep an eye on Silke Fleischer's blog. I'm pretty sure that any news will likely appear there before most other venues.

    Rick:

This is one of those questions I should have put a little more thought into before posing. Of course, you are right and I appeciate the civility of your response.
I find myself in the enviable yet frustrating position wherein I can purchase Captivate for my company if I choose, or stay with a competitor's product. Not knowing what the next iteration is likely to offer--and not seeing a couple of must-haves in the current version--makes it difficult to justify the purchase based on wishful thinking.

    Hi Linneaus

Unfortunately all you are likely to hear is speculation here. The thing is, if someone were to be testing a new version of Captivate, they would be bound by Non-Disclosure Agreement. Saying something publicly would probably result in being ejected from the program.

The bottom line here is that only Adobe can speak with any true authority as to what any features will emerge if a new version is in the works. And you probably won't hear a peep out of them until they are ready to announce a new version is available for purchase.

The muppets are at their work here. Try: http://blogs.adobe.com/silke.fleischer/2008/06/. [Under Adobe Captivate Masters Class Review]. So Captivate 4 is in fact in production and addressing (some) of the issues that limit Captivate 3. Having got rid of that fact, I would say circa October 2008 onward for Captivate 4. Any later and they will be chasing the competition - not a good place to be. Personally, I would wait for Captivate 5 or 6 before Adobe get their act together on Captivate (if that will in fact be the name for the next itteration). Go for Camtasia and Flash, you know it makes sense in the long run.
