Question

Captivate 5 will not publish to Flash

Hello.  I'm in a corporate help desk.  We have a user using Captivate 5, and she is attempting to publish to a zipped file for Flash 10, for publishing in LMS.  When she tries, it creates a 0 byte HTML file and nothing else.

Using the same save file, I am able to successfully publish it on my computer.  We have also tried having a different user sign into her computer and publish via Captivate, and they have the same issue, so it doesn't seem to be bound to her Windows profile.

I've verified that the location exists, and that we have write permissions.  We have also created a folder under her C drive, and verified she had write permissions to it, and tried publishing there, and we had the same issue.

This is happening with all files she attempts to publish from Captivate 5.  It should be noted that she ALSO has Captivate 4 installed on her machine, for backwards-compatability with other elements of the company.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Trying to eliminate some things...

your original post says they are publishing to a zip file.  Are they able to publish just to html/swf, without the zip file? (altho I realize they can't open the original file, it seems)

1GB is a pretty big file, but not unheard of... can they publish smaller files?  Start a file from scratch, add a few elements, then publish it to swf/html, and zip?

We've tried opening smaller files, and they do not open either.  THe same issue - they only get to 80% and then they hang.

Troubleshooting publishing will be problematic as we cannot currently open any files at all.

Try turning off all compression options under Preferences.

    Starting with easy things first:

Try clearing out the Cache under Project Preferences > General Settings > Clear Cache

If that doesn't work, have you tried removing the Captivate Preferences folder?  Removing or renaming this folder allows Captivate to set it up again on next launch.

However these suggestions are really long shots because if other users on different profiles have the same issue, it's likely to be due to a deeper cause than these.

Your next stop may be to deregister Captivate on that PC (so that you can reuse your license) then uninstall and do a fresh re-install.

A quick update - both myself and the user are busy, so I'm trying to wrangle time to clear the cache and kill the preferences file.  I just wanted to verify:  Can you confirm that Captivate 4 and Captivate 5 can be installed concurrently on the same machine?

    Thanks!

Just FYI: I have Captivate 4, 5 and 5.5 on the same machine. Think Rod has even 3 as well
