Captivate 7: setting an object to appear later in slide doesn't work

Also, setting an object to disappear later in the slide works only intermittenly. the "visible in output" box is checked. I noticed these seem to work sometimes when previewing using "play slide" option but not "from this slide" option or "in web browser" option.

Can anyone advise if I am missing a setting?

How are you making it "appear" and "disappear"? Is this triggered by an interactive object? If not, you can change the position of your object on the timeline so that it appears when you want it and time the object to disappear after a specific amount of time. You can do this using Property Inspector also,

I have audio playing on the slide. I have created objects (text captions, smart objects) and set them to appear at different intervals on the timeline to coordinate with the audio. I use the properties box for each object and enter a number in the timing section "Appear after xx sec".

When I preview the slide using "play slide", it works. But when I preview the slide using "from this slide" or "in web browser", the objects don't appear at the pre-set time on the timeline.

I have also set some objects to be initially visible, then "display for specific time" and set a time for them to disappear. The odd thing is if I have several objects set to disappear at different times, some of them do and some of them don't. I use the same properties setup and can't identify a pattern as to why this happens.

You have to know that Play slide is NOT a preview at all, although it is in the Preview menu. No temporary file is created, it is only meant to be used for editing/synchronizing reasons.

If one of the real previews doesn't show what you want, some interactive object may be pausing the slide. If you want us to detect the reason, please post a screenshot of the Timeline of that slide.
