Captivate 8 crashes when I open and close Preferences for new software simulation

Captivate 8 on Windows crashes when I select Record New Software Simulations, click the Settings button to open Preferences, and click OK to close Preferences.

Captivate does not crash when I open Preferences by selecting Edit >Preferences from an open project and click OK to close Preferences.

I have tried clearing out my cache and renaming the Preferences folder (Captivate 8.0) under Users > MyName > AppData > Local > Adobe. Neither action stopped Captivate from crashing when I open and close Preferences for a new simulation.

Does anyone have a solution?

Thank you in advance.

When Captivate appears to 'crash' does it return control if you hit the ESCAPE key on your keyboard?

If so, then Captivate hasn't actually crashed.  (If it HAD crashed you'd be seeing a dialog telling you about an AppCrash.)

I suspect your issue might be that at some point in the recent past you were using a multiple monitor setup which you then changed and now one of those dialogs you were calling up is appearing somewhere off screen where you cannot interact with it.

Thanks to you and Lilybiri for your responses.

Rod, you are right, Captivate wasn't actually crashing. The message that appeared said it had stopped working.

Per Lilybiri's suggestion, I tried running Captivate as Administrator, but the problem still occurred.

    I’m running Captivate 8.0.0.145.

When I tried to upgrade to 8.0.1.242, I received an “Update Failed” message that said “Updates could not be applied. This patch is not applicable to you”.

My next step was to go to Windows Control Panel and open Event Viewer from Administrative Tools.

Learned that ntdll.dll was a "faulting module" for AdobeCaptivate.exe.

An Internet search revealed the .dll causes problems when it is corrupt.

So I reinstalled Captivate 8 and the problem went away. Captivate now continues working when I open Preferences for a new software simulation.

Do you run Captivate as Administrator? Are you on 8.0.1.242?
