Question

Captivate 8 Not Grouping Items Correctly

I am working on creating a shared action in Captivate 8 that will make the slide with about 20 images on it that will make the project show two images and hide the other 18 images when the user clicks on a button (there will be 11 buttons). In order to make the shared action work correctly, I need to group the two images and then set the shared action to show the group. I have loaded all the images into the slide and am working in the timeline to group the images, but when I select two images and select Group, Captivate is randomly assigning two images to the group! I have cleared my cache and restarted Captivate and the same problem keeps on happening. The only way I can figure out how to fix this is to start all over again and group the images as I load them into Captivate instead of loading all the images. Please tell me I am missing a simple fix and do not have to start all over again!

Thank you!

Beth

Can you check the exact version number that you are using? Could you also post a screenshot of that slide?

If I understand your explanation well, I would myself group the 18 images, and since you cannot have subgroups, use a shared action with 3 commands and 3 parameters:

  • Hide Gr_Images
  • Show Im_A
  • Show Im_B

The group and the two images will be parameters. For each application you'll have to define those three parameters, you cannot tell the shared action that the first one (group) is always the same.

BTW, in Captivate 9 I would use states

Thanks for the suggestion, Lilibiri, but I can't group the other 18 because I am going to have each button show two images, so they need to be grouped by twos. I have never done something like this which such a busy slide before, this could be a reason to push myself into getting Captivate 9, if it won't happen again. Usually it would only be one button per image for the shared action, so I wouldn't have to worry about grouping first.

Why grouped by two? Didn't I explain well? That shared action can be used with each button, you just have to indicate which two images you have to show (parameter 2 and  3) and the total group as parameter 1. If you first hide everything you can show whatever duo you want from the whole group.

Hi there

Sounds like maybe you need to employ Captivate's ability to hide objects on the slide. Hide them all, then show only what should be in the group. Then group.

Note that this only simplifies your editing experience. If something is hidden on the Timeline as shown, it is still visible in the output.

Cheers... Rick

Yeah, I tried that too. I hide everything except what I was pairing and it still randomly picked hidden objects! I think the file must be corrupted or something. At this point, I am scrapping it and starting over. Ugh.

Thanks for your help!
