Captivate 8: Quiz slides advance on their own, cannot make them stop advancing

I've got a short presentation with a 4-question quiz at the end.  I've got buttons on every slide, including the quiz slides.  I've made several such presentations, all with quizzes, and none of the other presentations have this problem:  the question slides advance without the answers being selected. The other slides do not do this, only the question slides.  No matter what I do, the slides advance on their own.  I've made this presentation almost lock-step with another I made, and with the other presentation, the quiz slides all stop until the user clicks the "next" button.  I cannot figure this one out - why are my quiz slides advancing even with a button (actually several buttons) on the stage?  I feel like I'm missing some kind of command, but because I've been staring at this thing all day, I can't seem to see what's wrong.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

It happened to me too, and only on short answer type questions and it appears only on retakes, not first attempts. Of course I did not delete any embedded objects or default buttons, titles, or captions or anything like that. I still have not found a solution to this very annoying problem and if anyone has any advice I would sure appreciate it. Just received another report of the same behavior happening as I typed this. I will try deleting the question slide and rebuilding it, but I don't have high hopes for that time-consuming "solution." Yet another chapter in my love-hate relationship with Adobe.

Thank you for the advise about using the name pause.

Its worth mentioning that I even created a new module from scratch and only added 3 quiz slides to it for testing. I didnt change or add anything on the quiz slides with the exception of adding the on enter - play audio to each slide and to add music for each answer by using the advanced answer options. I still ran into the exact problem.

I am assuming its yet another glitch. I ran into this problem with version 8 and now with 9.

In case someone runs into this problem again as I just did, I believe I have finally found a solution. I was having the exact same problem with knowledge check questions. I have 3 quiz slides one after another. They all have audio that plays when you enter the slide(on enter - play audio) and I used advanced answer options on each answer that plays some audio that tells the user if they got the question right or not.

The first slide worked just fine, it plays the audio and allows the user can answer the question. When it gets to the 2nd question, the audio plays but then it advances to the next question as soon as the audio is over without giving the user time to answer the question.

When I removed the checkmark from advanced answer options, the quiz would function just fine. It would allow the user to answer every question but I still need the audio response for each answer. I need to use the advanced answer options.

To combat this, I did the following:

I removed the audio from playing on enter

I created an advanced action for each quiz slide - named it pause(pause1, pause2 etc) set a pause action and then a play audio action to play the audio track

Now the quiz pauses and I have no more issues.

Hope that helps someone... and myself in 6 months when I forget again

A couple of comments:

  • Using the name pause for an Advanced Action is not a good idea as that word may be a reserved keyword in Captivate.
  • Another possible reason why quiz questions can misbehave and not pause as yours were doing is that you may have removed some of the default Quiz Title or Quiz Text captions on those quiz slides. Those captions might look like they are just normal captions but they are actually special objects that ONLY occur on quiz slides and MUST be present for the slides to function correctly.  Captivate doesn't prevent you from deleting them (which it ideally should).  So if you HAVE removed these captions on any slides, the only way to fix the questions is to delete them and insert new ones.

Typically this behaviour occurs because at some point you have removed one or more of the default text captions or buttons that are found on quiz slides.  The usual ones that cause issues if they are missing are the Question Title and Question Text captions, or the Submit button.

If you have removed or replaced any of these objects, you will need to rebuild those quiz slides from scratch by starting again with newly inserted quiz slides.

I tried that this morning - the slides continue to advance on their own.  I replaced all of the quiz slides with new slides, used the properties panel to remove the "continue" button, hid the "submit" button (because client wants "submit all" at the end), and still, the slides advance on their own.  Not sure what to do at this point - all my other quizzes do not react this way. I might have to start from scratch, which is a time consumer.

Okay, I have a solution, but still no answer as to why I need to do this:

I've added a Pause to each question slide, and now they only advance when the user clicks NEXT.  I have not had to do this with any other quiz, but this is simple and it works without messing with timing or adding buttons and hiding them.  Thank you both for your suggestions.
