Question

Captivate 8 responsive project NOT responsive for laptops

I have a question around our Cp8 Responsive project please.

We’ve noticed on Laptops 2cm or so at bottom of the project is hidden and learners need to scroll down to see content.  On a desktop screen all content is shown and scrolling down is not required which is great.

What is interesting is the Cp Playbar is responsive for both laptop and desktop but the playbar does cover our content on a laptop view.  This is not great.

I’d like to know why users need to scroll down to see all the content on laptops.  We have not altered break points or used a custom screen/stage size.  I understand we are using a theme from the Cp8 responsive theme list but have added a white background to it.

Many thanks

This has been a real learning experience and support offered in this space is second to none.

Success - Our responsive project is in fact responsive on laptops.  It appears the default zoom level was set to 125% of IE11 on the pilot laptops therefore requiring our testers to vertically scroll.  Resetting to 100% zoom level and no vertically scrolling needed.

Interesting to note, Chrome version 61 zoom level needs to be set at 90% to avoid scrolling.

The challenge with breakpoint responsive design is that you cannot control what's on the end users laptop (or any computer for that matter). Users might install toolbars and zoom in their viewport to make web pages appear larger. If your target audience is primarily desktop or laptop users and if you don't actually anticipate many mobile users, you might want to consider designing with static design (Blank, non-responsive) and then selecting HTML Scaling when you publish. The result is an eLearning course that while fixed in aspect ratio, will scale up or down and be fully viewable on almost any device.

    Thank you @Paul_Wilson

HTML scaling is definitely a worthy discussion with my team rather than potentially using Responsive projects. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.  I just watched your YouTube video "Choosing the Right Resolution". This is on the mark regarding the decisions our team needs to make.  Thank you

Because you are still on CP8, didn't want to post a link to this blog post, which is comparing the 3 ways of having a course ready to be deployed on all devices: rescalable, fluid, or full responsive: You don't have the 'fuild' type:

Fluid Boxes Or Breakpoint Views? - Captivate blog

The drawback of Rescalable is that the learner has always to use landscape view. However about 90% of the projects I publish will be rescalable. Breakpoint views responsive projects will take at least double the time to have a course that can be viewed correctly on most devicies (forget 'all' devices), it gives you full control over the layout for the breakpoints but in between the resolutions of the breakpoints text will nog rescale which makes it really because you have only 3 breakpoints (CP9 has up to 5). I do switch to that type of design when use of smartphones, both in landscape and portrait mode, is expected to be used frequently.

What are the screen resolutions on the laptop versus the desktop?

What are the Windows Display percentages set to on each?

Thank you for your prompt reply @RodWard.

Your question "What are the resolutions on the laptop...?".  This sparked my thinking.    I now suspect that "Zoom In" on the browser was set too high.  Changing the zoom to "Actual Size" on Safari now shows all content and vertical scrolling is not required.  I will test this further Monday on other notebooks.

When you ask "What are the Windows Display percentages?" are you referring to Zoom In via the browser?

    Many thanks...

No.  I was actually referring to the Display Percentage setting under Display Settings in the Windows OS. If that is set too high it can also cause similar problems.
