Captivate 9 hangs on startup Mac OS Sierra

I installed Captivate 9 (9.0.2.421) on my Mac running OS Sierra.   When I launch CP it loads through the splash screen and then comes up with the screen to select the type of project.   Then it hangs -- the rainbow spinner appears and it will not let me do anything.   I have waited for up to 10 minutes and it is still spinning. 

So I looked to see if there was an update.  I found 9.0.2.437.   So I downloaded it and tried to install it.   It told me that the update failed and that the Adobe Application Manager  may be damaged, and to download and install a new copy of the Adobe Application Manager.   Which I did.

Retried the update and it gives me the same message -- Update Failed.  Adobe Application Manager may be damaged.

So I am stuck.  Not sure what to try next.
