Question

Captivate 9 - is my idea possible?

Let me try and explain what I want to create. I would like to have some activities to have students practice designing a lighting system. My idea is that I'll provide them with an actual customer request. I show them the lay-out including the customer demands. Based on that they should be able to generate a bill of materials. I want to provide them with a list of available components. In this list they should be able to say how many of each component they want for their design. After filling out the list, press a button and the list will be checked.

Is this possible in Captivate 9? After this they need to do more but I want to jump this hurdle first.

Thanks

Possible? Sure, I would not want to develop in Captivate.  It first see if there is a tool/exercise that is available.  This sounds similar to WiFi planning tools for wireless network design. Placement of Access Points that can show coverage maps and then print out a Build of Materials.  My thought would be to use Google Sketchup with a top view floorplan.

Thanks, I have never heard of Google Sketchup before, look interesting. It is a tool and not one that my trainees will buy. I'm creating some exercises to teach them the different design considerations. With that they should be able to use any tool out there.

Yes it is possible.  I'm assuming "the list will be checked" means that there is a correct answer for the scenario you are giving them.

The easiest thing I can think of (assuming I understand what you are trying to do) is to create fill in the blank questions asking how many of each component they need.  I'm not sure if you can have multiple questions on one slide.

A more complex version would be to use input boxes, create your own submit button that validates the entries and then triggers either a 'you are right' or 'you are wrong' event.

What you have described so far is technically possible to achieve with Captivate yes.  But it requires some advanced skills with using Captivate variables and Conditional Advanced Actions.  If you are a beginner user of Captivate, I do not recommend you attempt this.  It may well be beyond your capabilities. You might be wise to consider employing the services of an experienced Captivate developer who already has the necessary expertise.

Thanks for your answer. Luckily I'm not new seem to have a knack for picking this up fairly quickly. Then again I don't have another option, my company isn't wiling to spend any money on this.

I'll start figuring it out, seems like a good way to spend my Friday afternoon.

It is possible, but try to put down all situations. Just some questions:

    • Sequence of filling in amounts in different fields is not imposed, I suppose?
    • Do you want to check at the end if all fields are filled? In that case have a look at: Where is Null? - Captivate blog
    • Will you allow the user to change entries?
    • Do you want to score and to transfer to a LMS?
    • Do you want immediate feedback?

Just some ideas, I learned by trial and error that it saves time putting down answers to that type of questions before plunging into advanced actions. You can use either Text Entry Boxes (I would not validate them immediately) or Scrolling Text Interactions for the fields. In both cases you'll need to evaluate the values of the associated variables.
