Captivate 9 - preview not running entire slide timeline

Hi - fairly new to Captivate and really getting stuck on a basic. So basic I couldn't find answers anywhere.

My project has slides that run for different lengths of time. I've set the default to 20 seconds in the preference tab.

But whenever I preview the project then it only runs to about 10 seconds and everything animated to appear after that doesn't.

It's driving me nuts.

If I play the slide timeline everything works perfectly but not in preview (except 'Play Slide').

I don't know whether its an issue with the preview or my project but it's a real stumbling block.

Any suggestion or insight appreciated.

Graeme

Unless there is an interactive object in the Group_29 which is not expanded, there is no reason why this slide would only show up till 10 secs. Other possibility would be an interactive object either on the used master slide, with a a pause, or an interactive object on a previous slide that is timed for the rest of the project. In both cases you should see that object on the stage.

BTW Play slide is NOT a preview, only mean to synchronize objects like you did with the staggering. If another Preview method (best are the Browser previews) result in the slide stopping somewhere, there should be a pause. You can check when previewing whether the progress bar in a playbar is stopping?

Another less probably cause could be that the objects not showing up, are set to be Invisible in output: check the eye icon in their Properties panel top left.

HI

Thank you - I discovered a button in the group that paused at 9 seconds!!! It must have been a legacy from when I was creating navigation through trial and error and it was hidden by other buttons.

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

If you had expanded that group, would have seen it immediately.

Understanding the timeline is one of the first basics to learn about Captivate. Setting the default duration to more than the default duration of 3 seconds is mostly unnecessary. Personally I only use a longer duration in these specific situations:

  1. When slide audio is added: you'll get automatically the question to increase the slide duration to the length of the audio clip (do not make it too long)
  2. When you stagger objects on the timeline, because you want them to appear at different moments, probably in synchronization with audio.

If you only want to offer the user control over slides, insert an interactive object like a 'Next' button. The easiest way to do that is to put a shape button on the main master slide, and set it to pause until the user clicks. Each slide will then be paused at its end, and user has to click that shape button to advance. More tips about Timeline in this old post:

Most of it is still valid, with the exception of the Effects timelines which are integrated in the main timeline for Captivate 9.

This is a fairly common 'issue' for people that are new to Captivate.

Check your timeline for any interactive objects that would be pausing the playback.  These objects DON'T pause the timeline when you are just using Play Slide or F3 preview (which is not really publishing the project) but WILL pause the timeline and prevent objects from appearing AFTER that point when you publish out or use one of the Preview options that also publish.

Thank you both for the responses

RoadWard - I've been through all objects and they are all set to 'Display for rest of Slide' but appear at different points - it's a list of 10 items that I wanted to animate to appear at different times.

Lilybiri - It's probably the second situation - stagger when objects appear. I've got Next and Back buttons that come on a 0 sec and stay for 'Rest of slide'. I'll have a look at your blog thank you.

Not sure if its any use but attached is screen shot of the offending page and one of the words that is not appearing

Thanks again for your replies
