Captivate 9 - Responsive project - Mobile Portrait - Propagate change up from Mobile to desktop

Hi All,

I am using Captivate 9 to create a responsive project. The main users of the project will be mobile device users. I am doing  my development in the Mobile Portrait 'view'. I will have some users that use a table or desktop to view the session. I know that if I develop in desktop view, everything I add is propagated to the smaller views. Rather than start at the desktop and adjust to smaller views, can I work backwards and start on the smallest view, Mobile Portrait, and have my data propagated to the larger views? I ask because I started my development in Mobile Portrait and when I publish, nothing shows up in the standard browser until I adjust it to a mobile size.

Thanks,

Peter

You do not need to go responsive just to reach mobile devices.  An ordinary project published to HTML5 will do that.  Responsive is only necessary where you need to have content displayed on small screened mobile phones as well as larger screens for desktops or tablets AND your content isn't going to be adversely affected by rotating or rearranging it for portrait viewports.

I hate to tell you this but...in Captivate responsive mode, Mobile First doesn't mean what you might think.  You start with Desktop.  It doesn't work the other way round.

Since this probably means you'll be rebuilding your project, the next thing you should be looking at is whether or not you should be using Responsive at all.  You don't need to use Responsive mode just to publish for mobile devices, and in some cases your intended content might not be suitable for a responsive project anyway. (E.g. software simulations or projects with a lot of movement around the screen.)

It's good to get all these things sorted out early.

    Hello Rod,

Thanks for the reply. In my requirements for this project, I have about 80% of users using mobile devices and the other 20% using tablets, and laptops. I thought responsive would give me the best coverage. I will not have any software sims, or video; just audio. Is there a project type that may be a better fit for this?

    Sincerely,

    Peter
