Is captivate the right choice for a paid internet learning platform? (So, no Intranet solution for one company only).

    Captivate is an eLearning authoring tool, not a 'platform'.  It is meant to create eLearning courses. To sell those courses you can set up a webshop, or you can use using a Learning Management system. Such a LMS can manage accounts, and you could sell 'accounts'.
