Question

Captivate freezes when working with swf files

I have been working with Captivate for a couple of years. I am now working on Captivate 4 and have created many projects using Flash files and inserting the swf files into Captivate. As of the end of last week, any slide I try to edit with a swf file causes me to freeze up and I get "not responding", I have to reboot and try again. I have even tried creating a blank project and inserting animation, and inserting the swf. It displays the properties box, but when I click OK, it freezes up and I get "not responding" again. I have tried inserting the same small flash file on my co-workers computer and it works with no problems. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Captivate. Cleaned and defragmented my harddrive, etc. with no results. I have read through many threads and found no resolution. Please help!

This is probably one of those issues that would be best resolved by one of the Adobe technical staff chiming in, but I'll offer a couple of suggestions that I have heard of that resolved similar issues.

  • Have you tried updating your Flash Player?
  • Have you installed the latest Java update? (Some Captivate functionality is Java-based)
  • Have you tried deleting the Adobe Captivate folder located at: C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Roaming\Adobe  ?  (This is the location on Windows 7 or Vista)  This is where Captivate stores Preferences.  Sometimes they get into a knot.  Captivate 4 will recreate this folder again on next start up so you can delete or rename it at will.

As I said, the best people to resolve these issues are the Adobe Development Team members.  Hopefully one of them is listening and will chime in and offer you the option of a Connect session so they can explore the reasons.

Thank you so much for your input.

* I have updated the Flash Player.

* I have installed the latest Java update.

* I have NOT deleted the folder C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Roaming\Adobe.  I have Windows XP and can't locate the folder. I did a search for anything with the name "roaming" with no results. Any suggestions on another location?

On Xp it might be in a location like:

C:\Documents and Settings\<USER NAME>\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Captivate
