Hello Everyone.

I have a cp file that was last edited 8/21.
I made a backup of all Captivate 2 projects before upgrading to Captivate 3.

I open the project and it does not matter if I choose the Overwrite or Save As options, the following 2 messages is received.

Exeption Occored [\num]
"Adobe Captivate could not open filename.cp because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)."

This file has never been emailed or opened from a network drive. The file lives directly on the PC.
This is the only project that did not open correctly.

Does any one have a suggestion, other that the obvious recreate from the generated output?

Thanks for your imput.

For anyone who is interesed.

I ended up reloading Captivate 2.
I opened Captivate 2 & 3 at the same time.
I was then able to copy all of the slided from Captivate 2 and paste them into Captivate 3.

After everything was copied to Captivate 3 and I verified everything was working, I uninstalled 2 &3 and reinstalled 3.
Everything is working now.

First, I sincerely hope you didn't remove version 2 from your machine when you installed version 3. You can try opening the CP file in its original V2 form, and at worst, do any editing you need in version 2.

Are you certain you were trying to convert a version 2 file to version 3, and didn't have version 2 open by mistake and were trying to open a version 3 CP? That would account for the "... not a supported file type" verbiage, though it sounds far-fetched, even to me.

Back to your problem, JMS: Have you tried opening that particular project in version 2 and saving it to a new name and or location, then trying once again to open that file in version 3? Just a thought ... but if that doesn't help, and you still want to open it in version 3, the only other suggestion I have is to keep using "Save As" to create new files from the original, then removing parts of the file (say the last 50% to begin) until you find what the problem is.

When a project goes "corrupt", it is often not the whole project that is bad, but a single object in it. The above process of elimination is designed to find the "problem object (or slide)". I would start with the objects that are not a native part of Captivate, such as animations you created yourself ...

GENERAL NOTE ON WORKING WITH NEW VERSIONS
Converting file types can often be a harrowing experience. Because of that, when I am working on a large (multiple file) project, I always complete it in the version I used to begin it ... saving my first work in the new version for practice, and of course for brand-new projects ... after a few hours of that practice time.

Best of luck!
