I have downloaded the trial version for Mac and when I load the DMG I can see the install app and two folders (Packages and Payloads) when I double click the install I get an error that the installer failed to initialise! is this a known issue?

It may be that the applications were trying to use the Akamai service, you might have better luck with these installers:

Adobe Captivate 9 Direct Download Links: Free Trials with no Akamai | ProDesignTools

    Or use these direct links:

Adobe Captivate 9 Direct Download Links

Adobe Captivate is now available only as a native 64-bit application to achieve higher performance.
UPDATE (June 2016) – Adobe has now added a 32-bit version for the Captivate 9.0.1 release. (If you’re unsure what architecture your Windows computer is, see this page.)

    Captivate 9 – Windows 32-bit (1.4 GB):   File 1   File 2

    Captivate 9 – Windows 64-bit (1.7 GB):   File 1   File 2

    Captivate 9 – Downloadable Assets – Windows (1.4 GB):   File 1

    Captivate 9 – NeoSpeech Text–to-Speech Voices – Windows (1.7 GB):   File 1

    Captivate 9 – Mac (1.7 GB):   File 1

    Captivate 9 – Downloadable Assets – Mac (1.4 GB):   File 1

    Captivate 9 – NeoSpeech Text–to-Speech Voices – Mac (1.7 GB):   File 1

See the complete system requirements for Captivate 9 to make sure your computer is ready before proceeding with installation.

Thank you! I was having the same issue but the work around your described worked great.  I just showed content of the install package then drilled down till I found install and it stated right up.

Ok I have figured out a work around I opened the Install folder and navigated to install/contents/MacOS/install and double clicked that. It seems to be working!
