Question

Changing sound object

If I create hundreds of quizzes with Adobe Captivate, and each time the user clicks an answer a sound is played, how do I change the sound later on without doing it manually for each quiz?

For example, is there a way to create a Sound-Object and then insert this in every quiz. Then I associate the Sound-Object with an mp3. If I want to change the sound then I just change the mp3, which is associated with the object. Is something like this possible?

It sounds like you may also want to look at the shared library functionality.

I just wanted to point out that you can right click a sound the library, choose 'edit,' and edit the file within the Cp audio editing dialog.

You can use the buttons to import another file, copy from the library, etc.

@BDuckWorks Why would this work flow be better? It would if the audio file had to be edited, but it is much shorter just to replace it by another clip from the Library itself with the Audio Properties. Maybe I miss something, I also do not understand the word 'shared Library'? Could you explain? Do you mean an External Library from another project?

I didn't mean to say it was a better option, but the OP had asked:"For example, is there a way to create a Sound-Object and then insert this in every quiz. " Accessing the Edit tab on the slide audio dialogue allows recording as well as editing and importing, so I thought this might be a more dynamic approach, but just an alternative.

As for 'shared library,' that was my term, I should have called it an External Library, as the OP is looking for a technique to reuse assets across multiple projects.

I'm not sure how you inserted the audio, you talk about a Sound object only.

Can you try this work flow, which will explain why I find the Library one of the most important features of Captivate:

  • Identify the audio clip if necessary, open the Library and locate that audio clip
  • You'll see the Usage number in the Library: check if this is indeed the clip that you used everywhere.
  • Right-click on that audio clip and choose Properties
  • Click on the Import button and browse to the new clip. In this screenshot I replaced the original clip 'Electronic Splash' by a recording.
  • When confirming, the audio clip will be updated in the Library and so will all instances in your file.

This is the normal work flow when you want to replace any asset in the library by another asset, works also for images, SVG's etc.

You will still have to do this in each file however. Please do not use a MP3, prefer a WAV file whenever possible.
