Characters Not Appearing

Hi! Does anyone have any insight with using characters in Captivate 9? I have downloaded several, but I do not see them when clicking media > characters. They are in a folder on my computer, because they are there when I attempt to insert them as a regular image; however, when I do that, Captivate says it does not support that file type.

Sorry about that redundancy.

1) Have you unzipped / installed the files?

Check your downloads folder.

2) Are you working on a recently updated version of Captivate?

I.E., have you installed the Cp 9 update to version 9.0.2?

If not, install the updates from each PC using the Help > Updates menu option (but you will need to be an administrator to do this).

If you have updated, verify the preferences and cache files were handled correctly.

Compare your process with the details in the 'readme' from the Captivate update files.

You may need to delete them and rebuild, but that's better than a full reinstall.

In another thread, Re: Sluggish performance after update pbdw1969 suggested:

Follow the steps as outlined in the release notes for the update.

You may also want to clear out your cache.

To clear your cache, with Adobe Captivate running but no projects open...

  1. Click Edit / Preferences (Shift + F8)
  2. Click on the General Settings category
  3. Click the Clear Cache... button
  4. Click OK

Thanks for all of your help!! I forgot to get back with you because I was scheduled to get a new computer that same afternoon, and when I did, I found all of the characters! If I run into any problems in the future, I will definitely use your advice. Thanks!

When you say your "attempting to insert them as a regular image," it tells me you've missed an important step:

Insert character images

Click Insert > Characters, click one of the options from Category, and click an image.

In my original post, I said I had tried clicked > characters as well, but the dialog box is empty. The images are downloaded to my computer because I see them in the eLearning assets folder, so I don't know what I'm missing. I attached a screen shot of what the insert characters dialog box looks like. Also, if I click "okay" from this dialog box, it terminates the program.

Which version of 9 do you use? If you updated by installing the patch to either 9.0.1 or 9.0.2 did you clean the Preferences and delete the Layouts folder in Public Documents? You can still do it now, if you forgot those essential steps (they are in the release notes) while Captivate is closed. Maybe it will solve your issue, some users had the same problem and this helped.

Do you have access to the other categories: Business, Casual.....?

ow did you download them? Did you use the Dialog box that appears when opening Media, Characters?

They should be stored in the Public Documents\Adobe\eLearning Assets\Characters_9_0 in different categories. To be able to see them in the dialog box there should be for each Character an Images and a Thumbnails folder.
