Question

Complete or Incomplete When Failed?

We are using Captivate to build rapid e-learning, which we deliver via SumTotal 7.1.

My current issue is this: when a student fails a course configured so that a student could take the course infinite times until they pass it is recorded in the LMS as Failed and Completed. The issue with this is that once marked Complete the course is moved out of the student training schedule and into their training history. All of this is perfectly logical... but what we want is for the course to stay in the student's training schedule until passed or removed. In this manner they will see the course whenever they are in the system to take a course In Progress or that they newly registered for. They will be reminded to retake the course in this way.

Is there a setting in Captivate for this? Is this an LMS configuration? Is there some scripting that I can place in the Captivate code that basically says 'failed = incomplete'? We have a number of vendor courses that do what we are looking for, but can't figure out how to make Captiviate behave in such a manner.

Thanx in advance.

Chuck

Since my last post I have tried a few ideas:

Setting user must pass this quiz does not affect the complete/incomplete SCORM reporting. The SCORM results are sent when the quiz is complete.

Setting the quiz to report pass/fail and then setting "If passing grade" to "Execute JavaScript" of
api.LMSSetValue("cmi.core.lesson_status","completed");
also does not work

If anyone can figure a way to have Contribute report "completed" based on a passing quiz score, please post it here!

I can't believe that Adobe Captivate can not mark a course as "completed" contingent on passing the test!

I am also using FlashForm from Rapidintake, and this setting is possible with their software. So, this is not a problem with the LMS, but a limitation of the Captivate software. In FlashForm, the setting is 'pass or incomplete (SCORM1.2)' under Record Lesson Status. Is there some way in Captivate3 to accomplish this same action?

What about looking under the Quiz Preferences and in the 'settings' area, select 'Pass required - the user must pass this quiz to continue'. Then add a few more pages after the quiz? This way, the user must pass the test to view all pages and therefore must pass the test for the course to be marked as complete? That's my next try...

Thanx to both of you. I was thinking that would be the answer. I couldn't find anything that led me to believe that was possible, but I wanted to ask people far smarter than I before signing off on it. :-)

Thanx again.

Nothing wrong with your reply if that's what the OP was trying to do! I
absolutely agree, then, that would be unpossible ;-)

So I opened Captivate...
On the Quiz Manager dialog, choose:
1. Only report the score
2. Report complete/incomplete

Whether you report as a percentage or score shouldn't matter.
But, again, whether this results in your LMS behaving as you want, I've
no idea!

Hi Erik,
It sure looks to me like you can select "Pass/Fail" or "Complete/Incomplete", but you cannot select both (as I indicated earlier). What Chuck ("NativeAlien") is trying to do is mark the Captivate L.O. as "Failed", but leave it as an "Incomplete" when that happens.

Where do you think I went wrong in my earlier statement?? Am I experiencing a "Tuesday brain-rot" thing - or are you???

Seeing CatBandit's reply made me worried I was completely off my rocker!
So I opened Captivate...
On the Quiz Manager dialog, choose:

Whether you report as a percentage or score shouldn't matter.
But, again, whether this results in your LMS behaving as you want, I've
no idea!

I forget the specifics, but you probably can do this within Captivate.
You need to change the course from pass/fail to complete/incomplete,
yes? That's a setting in Captivate - look under the quiz manager.
I'm not sure how you can tell Captivate how to evaluate
complete/incomplete... it may be inflexible and only allow you to set
complete if the last page is seen by the user...
And whether your LMS allows complete/incomplete courses to behave as you
want, I don't know either - though it seems it does with other courses...

Good question, Chuck, and I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you. Your post prompted me to go over the Quiz Manager settings and I see nothing there that can be configured further than you have gone.

I have to think the answer is in the LMS . . .

Good luck!
