Content choices for a responsive (breakpoint) project

Hi everyone,

I am embarking on a CP 10 corporate course using breakpoints for desktop, tablet and cell phone. The biggest problem I have noticed so far is that I may need to "dumb down" the course so it fits on a cell phone. For example, a drag and drop knowledge check will not look or work well on a cell phone with my testing. I will have videos, audio and closed captions as well. My tests look messy on the phone, but better on the larger screens. What are you doing to solve this? I am thinking of simplifying the cell phone version (break point) and dumping interactive niceties and only keeping them for the larger screens.  But if people are making beautiful responsive courses that fit all screens and are not compromised, I'd love to see them.

Thoughts much appreciated!

Rachel

Thanks everyone. So if my client insists on desktop, tablet AND smartphone, I should insist that the bells and whistles be removed from smartphone version (breakpoint).... It sounds like there is no choice if I develop in Captivate. And I know my post is hardly a pole of those who have successfully put many bells and whistles in a captivate module on a smartphone, but it sounds like it is not doable according to you.

The user experience should be good. If you keep all the bells and whistles, maybe iit will be a bad experience becuause the learner has to wait a long time and/or it is difficult to find out on that small screen how to interact. It is all about the right balance.

When I get that requirement, I will try to strip down the smallest breakpoint as much as possible: replacing complicated images by small icons, no video, less audio when possible.  You cannot expect the same great experience on phones. For most browser resolutions on smartphones (often confused with the screenresolution) keep to the essential messages and leave out all bells and whistles.

It happened that the main goal was to smartphones, but that is a totally different question. The approach will then be different, no brekapoint views for desktop in that case.

I recommend you forget about the phone and just go with landscape on tablets and desktops. Unless you have a VERY compelling reason to believe that a significant number of people MUST access the course on a phone and have no other option, the limitations imposed by the small phone screen and portrait orientation simply don't make it worth worrying about.

That's my opinion, but your mileage may differ.

On my website for some years now I have had a poll where visitors (all Captivate developers) can indicate which outputs they are mainly using for their online courses.  Responsive has never exceeded 10% on that poll.  I know there are situations where it is called for.  But for my money, scaled HTML5 in Landscape mode is way more useful and doesn't come with all the hassles that people often run into with responsive.

Captivate's new Fluid Boxes are certainly an improvement in terms of making some things simpler to achieve, but they also tie your hands in many areas.  As always, it's a compromise.
