Corrupt .cp file

Hi guys,

Working away as normal on 30 odd sims today and decided to move the published files (.htm and .swf) into their own folder.
The .cp files didn't move and have always been isolated from the published files.

Pointless info you say? Yep, I agree. BUT the reason for that insight is that some (about 10 from 30) of my .cp files now do not open. I can not copy, delete or edit them. The right-click menu (in Windows, not Captivate) does not display the regular functions. The filesize has not changed and there are no known viruses.

If I open Captivate then select 'Open File' and choose one of these nasty .cp's, I get the message...

"The filename must contain at least one valid character".

Actual Filename: 5B - Maintain Competitors and Competitor Locations.cp

All my files are under that naming convention and about 10 won't open now.
I have last night's backups which seem to work but I am bamboozeld as to what has happened and afraid it may happen again (not to mention lost a day's work!)

Looking forward to your thoughts, advice and pure genius :) Thanks in advance.

I have been using a technique which has worked flawlessly for me (knock-on-wood etc): map a drive to a network folder so that the cp file is only ever nested one or two levels deep. I can then edit, save, and publish without incident - no crashes, no corrupt CP - even works for captures.

I think the trick is to keep the file path as short as possible so as not to trigger the buffer overflow bug in Captivate, or (if you move a file) exceed the 255 char limit of XP.

    Might solve it for you.

    Hi terrence wood

Bad bad advice. Read the post preceding yours. The one made my eggs11. If any of you spend perhaps 10 minutes searching this forum using the term "Network", you will likely find many posts where folks are bemoaning corrupt projects and other sorts of behavior. Even though your projects seem to work just dandy for now, it's probably just a matter of time. Just like playing Russian Roulette. You can't expect to play forever without hitting that loaded chamber...

However I DO agree with you on the character limitation of the file name. We have often seen where simply changing to a shorter path fixes things.

    Sincerely... Rick

    Captiv8r,

Can you confirm if you are referring to my post/ advice being incorrect re running on a LAN?
Since moving all files onto my c:/ I have had no problems. Thanks.

no genius here, but I went thorugh that too... and even without moving any swf or cp file.
I just founf it was necessary to make backups files every hour or so, and I decided not to use this program again in the future :-| too many issues!

Thanks for the info however I have something a bit more productive for future users.

DO NOT ever edit or capture onto a network drive. OK, I know it is common sense for multimedia however I thought I could save a bit of time by doing this. Wrong!

ALWAYS save and edit .cp files on a local disk as editing on a server WILL corrupt your files. Adobe Support has confirmed this and admits the glitch.

    Happy Captivating.
