Question

Current best 'all round' project resolution

Hi

This is a question that has been touched on a few times before but I thought I would see what the current consensus is.

I have to produce content for delivery mostly on desktop and tablets and occasionally phone. It includes some software simulations but is mostly more softskills and scenario content. The client has opted not to use responsive projects but rather to output to HTML 5 only from non-responsive projects.

My question is what project resolution (or aspect ratio) would people recommend. I imagine there will be a lot of tablet access so I guess it would be a landscape but should it be 1024 x 627 (which I see is the default responsive resolution) or 1024 x 768? I plan to publish with scaleable HTML content selected.

Many thanks in advance for any thoughts

M

Thanks for your swift response. Good advice! Do you think there is a reason Adobe went for 1024 x 627 as the responsive default (as opposed to 1024 x 768)? Do you think maybe they decided that this was the best overall compromise. Perhaps there was some other technical reason for their choice and I'm reading too much into it?!

I think you will find that the slightly shorter height dimension is intended to allow for playbars under the content.

The short answer to your question is that you should be testing various sizes on various devices and find the project size that looks best.  Remember that devices tend to have different sized viewports with slightly different aspect ratios.

I don't think anyone can give you a "perfect size".  You need to test everything on actual devices used by YOUR target audience to be sure you don't end up building something that shows scrollbars everywhere (for at least part of your audience).
