Default time for 100 text/image slides?

Hi all,

In Captivate 8, I notice that you can set a default time for each slide, with the default being 3 seconds or changeable for each project or on each slide in the Timeline.

Setting Default Duration: Best Practice?

I have 100 odd slides which are designed for the user/learner to read the text/images (on each slide) at their own pace, interact where relevant (e.g. Quiz, drag and drop, etc.), and then when they are ready, and finished with that particular slide to advance by clicking a 'Next' button (which will actually be an Interaction > Clickbox with an Action set 'On Success' to "Go to the next slide") or via the Table of Contents.

Is it best practice in Captivate 8 to set the duration to something long enough that everyone would be able to read (e.g. 5 minutes / 300 seconds) or to set the page duration at something like 10 seconds and control this via an Advanced Interaction or Effect.

Related, if I do set the default duration to say 5 minutes / 300 seconds, will this increase the file size of the exported e-learning module?

Thanks for reading this Any help is appreciated.

Cheers,

Adrian

There are only two reasons why I ever have a slide longer than the default 3 seconds:

  1. If I stagger objects on the timeline to have them enter the slide at different times
  2. I there is slide audio, because in that case the slide duration has to be at least the duration of the audio clip.

You can control with an advanced or shared action (interaction is a widget in Captivate terminology) but I don't understand how you would use Effects for that kind of control?

Hi Lilybiri,

Great, that's good to know. For some slides I will stagger objects so that they appear at different slides but otherwise keep them at around 3 seconds each.

I assume that you also keep any slides that feature video the same length as the video duration?

Best practice is NOT to make the slides any longer than they need to be.  If you are pausing the slide so that the user can read as quickly or as slowly as they want before then clicking a button or other interactive component to move to the next slide then you should NOT need to make the slides more than several seconds in length.  Having slides 300 seconds long can be a nightmare to maintain.  Keep them short.

Hi Rodward,

Thanks for your response. I'll keep the timelines short
