Define "Preloader"

I am working with Captivate v4 and have just read a thread which makes a comment about the preloader being 25%.

I have no idea what the preloader in fact does, and I see my preloader is set at 100%.

Could some kind person explain (in simple terms please) what the preloader is, and what is the difference between setting it to 25% (for example), or to 100%, as i have it set.

Thanks in advance

NEL

    Hi Noel

Have you ever watched a YouTube or other video and noticed that there are points where it will pause until more has loaded, play for a bit, pause, play and so on? This is what the preloader is designed to prevent.

Perhaps your project is 60 slides long. Assuming all slides are equal and the preloader is set to 30%, the Captivate output is launched but doesn't begin playing immediately. It waits until 20 slides (30%) have been received and then the playhead begins its travel. As the playhead is advancing from slide 1 to slide 20, the loading is continuing to occur. The thought behind this is that by the time the playhead reaches the 20 slide mark there is never a pause that is observed and things play cleanly.

    Hopefully that helps... Rick

    Hi Rick,

    Thanks...excellent answer (as usual).

So, for clarity, if I have my preloader set to 100%, the project wont start until all slides are loaded, right?

    Supplementary question..

A lot of my work is uploaded to my company LMS and run from there.

Will the same apply when a user opens the project from within the LMS...meaning if the preloader is 100%, all slides have to load before it starts to play ?

Or would LMS setting over-ride the preloader settings...

    Hi Nel

Admittedly I find myself in unfamiliar waters when speaking of LMS and how things may or may not operate. Lilybiri or Rod or Eric or others more versed in the dark arts of LMS will need to step in and answer that one.

    Cheers... Rick
