Question

Editing recorded videos

Hi all,

I have recently started creating videos using captivate. Our videos involve procedures to perform tasks/configurations/installations on the UI. If at some point there is a change in a screen on UI, and I have to capture that UI alone, is it possible to edit a section of the video. Recording the whole procedure again would be tedious. Basically I want to know how to edit a section of a video. Could someone shed some light here?

Thanks,

Lovina

Hi there

If this type of recording is your thing, full motion video I assume, you might find yourself pretty darn frustrated if Captivate is your tool of choice. Captivate works best with its other types of projects where it has recording in what I call "PowerPoint on steroids" mode.

If you feel video recording is the best way forward for you I might suggest investigating a tool that works much better for that. TechSmith's Camtasia. It works much more like a NLE (Non-Linear Editor) and you will find yourself much happier with that.

Of course, I'd like to keep both tools in my toolbox. Because each tool has its own strengths and weaknesses. For example, Captivate blows Camtasia out of the water when it comes to quizzing and creating "Simulation" type recordings.

Cheers... Rick

Hi Lovina,

The answer is yes and no. Captivate can perform some basic editing functions ( cut, reseize, etc) video but it can't perform complex functions like compositing or inserting new video onto an existing timeline. You can however record and publish new video and amend/edit with your existing footage it in another dedicated video editing software, such as Premiere Pro or Camtasia.

Hi Lovina,

Just had another thought.. did you mean a software simulation that is created using several screen capture slides? If so then yes you can easily amend that. You just re-record the new sections and replace the ones in your existing projects. I do it all the time.
