Question

Embedded video

I have a small .flv file I would like to embed into a captivate 2.0 project. When using the Insert menu, and selecting Flash Video, the options are: progressive download, streaming video, and Flash video streaming service. Is there any way to include the video by publishing a single .swf file that includes the video?

I am aware the embedding the video increases the overall size, and that streaming options offer other advantages, but I have been unable to achieve success by selecting the three options listed above. Furthermore, our tech environment on campus is convoluted and controlled by IT dept. It would be nice to just be able to upload single swf file with embedded video and avoid the hassle of trying to sort it out between various departments.

Hi Paul and welcome aboard. Hope we can help ... there are others more knowledgeable than I about streaming video, but I'll give your question a shot.

As I understand it, all FLV files are small because they are actually little more than pointer files. Try inserting the FLV using "Progressive" option, and when you send the published Captivate project (SWF) to the web server, be sure to include the SWF (for the FLV) with it. Having the SWF int he same folder should eliminate the need for a path when it is called by the FLV, but I won't bet my next paycheck on it.

The other option is to embed the SWF (instead of the FLV) into your Captivate project (Insert > Animation > select the SWF). I've found that for small flash video files, inserting them as animations can work just fine, and since the Flash video (SWF) is embedded, all you have to monkey with is the Captivate SWF.

Hope this makes sense - and helps you out.
