Error message

I have Windows 8.1 and latest version of Adobe Reader DC but most of the time (not always) I get an error message when I try and open files.  It reads something like this..Cannot open the file because it is either unsupported or damaged.  I get this message at least 10 times a day from different file attempts so it doesn't seem likely that they are all damaged or unsupported???  Please advise...
