error when opening .cp file

We have created some Captivate tutorials and have published them as .exe files into the same folder as the original .cp files.
We are now trying to re-open the .cp files and do more editing; however, we are receiving the below error message:

"Adobe Captivate could not open xxx.cp because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't corrected decoded)."

We are now unable to open 2 of our .cp files as a result of this error.
Has anyone ever received this message, and what does it mean?
Thanks, Mandy

Hi Mandy

Are these files stored on your local PC or on a network drive? You may wish to review the following Technical Note:

Yes, we have been saving the files to our shared network drive. However, there are some that will open and others that won't - is there any logic behind that? Is there any relation here to the file size - some of the files that won't open have multiple PPT slides included?
Is there any way to restore one of the files that we are getting the error message on?
Thanks!

Hi again

For starters, stop using the network and Captivate in this manner. Likely you won't be able to recover the two lost files. If you can't recover them, count it as a hard lesson learned in where not to store your project files. Actually, the fact you are storing them on the network isn't the issue. Storing them there for backup purposes is fine. What you don't ever want to do (for the reasons you have encountered) is to have them in a network location, then open Captivate and work on them while they are in this location.

One way to try and recover them is by creating a new blank Captivate project using the same dimensions as the errant projects. Then try to import the errant projects into the new project. I think this actually works maybe 1-2% of the time. Odds are that the .CP file is toast and you will have to start fresh with those two projects.

This brings up the following situation. I'm guessing you have either a .SWF or .EXE version of the two projects that still works just dandy, don't you? If you do, wouldn't it be way cool if you had some sort of a Captivate Decompiler that would take that working output and convert it back to an editable .CP file?

If you and anyone reading this thread feel the same way, please use the Feedback form to request it! You may do this by clicking here. It will likely never happen until they hear from enough users requesting it. And I'm guessing that right about now, such a utility would be priceless!
