we would like to set up a pool of questions for the exam maybe 40 questions but captivate randomly selects 20 questions for the exam. Can this be done? if so how can I set it up?

You need to create the question pool same way as you would create normal questions. Open the Question pool panel from the window menu. There are some limitations, you cannot use all the functionality of normal quiz slides (will post a link to a blog). The generic name of the question pool will be Pool1 but you can eventually rename. Insert a random slide from the Quiz menu. If you have only one pool it will automatically be chosen from that pool.
