Question

.exe launch in vista?

Hi, I am trying to build a help system in robo help with videos and have links in the help system linked to captivate published .exe files. But when the link is clicked it opens a dialog box asking to run or save, when run is clicked it works fine, but is there a way to set up the .exe to just play and not ask to run? It works fine on XP, but I am running Vista and it will not play the video unless I tell it to run. I've heard it might be a permissions problem, so I tried to set the privilege level to Administrator in the file properties, but the check box is grayed out. Does that mean it is selected already? Is there a way to set the privilege level before publishing? Any thoughts?

Hey Rick, I would like to avoid the video opening through a browser. I would like it to open directly in a flash player, without the need to open a browser. If I could script something that would size the browser down to the size of the player and essentially be invisible, I would definitely consider doing it that way. I am not very familiar with JavaScript, but If it doesn't require very advanced knowledge of it, I'm sure I could figure it out.

Thanks,

Luke

Hey Rick, I wouldn't mind if it called up the .swf, however the only way I have been able to get the .swf to call up and play is through IE, it will not play in a standalone player. Is there a way to make it launch with a flash player insted of IE?

Hi again

So you are saying you wish to avoid opening a browser? I say this because one would normally place the .SWF and .HTM (and other files) in the same folder, then simply open the .HTM to view the Captivate.

Of course, you can always use JavaScript to script out opening a new window with no chrome elements and at the location and size you want it. But I'll wait and see the answer before attempting to point you to resources or threads discussing that option.

Hey Rick, Brook and I are working on the same problem from differant ends. I am not working on it within robohelp, but what I have done is create a menu in captivate that links to the .exe files stored in a folder on my desktop, I figured the principal would be the same, but we keep getting the same result, the run or save dialog box.

Hi again

Out of curiosity, have you tried this using .SWF/.HTM output? Is .EXE a requirement?

Seems odd that Vista would prompt for that. Perhaps later on today I'll boot into Vista mode and test for myself to see if the same thing happens to me.

Cheers... Rick

Hi Lsyd0 and welcome to our community

Are you also Brook21679 in the RoboHelp forum? Your query is almost identical to a post over there.

Where is the file stored? Is it on the local file system or is it on a network drive? Or did you add it as a baggage file inside RoboHelp?

Cheers... Rick
