Question

F5 Shortcut not working properly

I'm using Captivate 4 to develop a training simluation of an application where the user can either click the button on the screen, or use the corresponding "F" key.  I've done several modules and all of the click boxes have worked fine... except one.  For this slide, if I click the button on the screen, it moves to the next slide as it's supposed to.  If I press the F5 shortcut key, it takes the user back to the beginning of the simulation.  It does not do this when I preview the module in Captivate; it only does this after it's been published to a .swf.

This was the first time I needed to use the F5 key, but I will need to continue to use it as I develop more modules for the application.  Is the F5 key programmed to do something in the browser (using IE7)?  Is there any way to fix this?

Thanks!

Sherriann

Hi there

I believe the browser reserves the F5 key for refreshing the page. This is why your simulation restarts.

Sorry, but I'm unaware of any way to prevent that from occurring. You will find there are a few different keys that the browser reserves for its own use and you can't work past them.

You might then ask why the key is available to use if it's worthless, no? And that would be a good question. What you have to keep in mind here is that you may also create an EXE output of your Captivate. EXEs don't play in the browser and aren't subject to the same restrictions.

Cheers... Rick

HI Rick ~  Thanks for the quick response!  I should have thought of that since I had a similar (although reverse) problem with using Esc as a shortcut.

With these, I am actually publishing as .swfs and dropping into Articulate slides (and for some will have to break the whole tutorial into multiple smaller pieces).  These modules will be delivered via our LMS and I was told that each module needed to be as close to 1MB as possible.  Obviously, that's not going to get me very far with Captivate .exe files.  But I was told that Articulate only pushes out one slide at a time, so I could have each slide be up to 1MB... allowing me to get more content into one module... especially if I break a whole tutorial into multiple smaller pieces.

Sooooo, I'll play around and see if I can drop an .exe file into an Articulate slide and make that work.

Thanks, again!
