failed to back up data

Hello!

Could you please help? When working on my captivate project I get this fatal error: "Failed to back up data" and then the application terminated: (A fatal error has occured and the application is being terminated. Adobe Captivate has tried to save all your work in the respective project folders as ".cpbackup" files. Please restart adobe Captivate.)

I tried to rename my prefences folder but in vain. Although I disabled the option "Generate Project backup" in Global preferences, the application still makes backups which causes the error and the termination of the project.

Is there another way to prevent the application from making backups?

I am using Adobe Captivate 9.0.2.437

Thank you very much for your help.

Correct answer RodWard

The usual method of locating corrupted slides is to HIDE or DELETE groups of slides (using a copy of your project) and then attempt the same action that was causing the crash or failure previously.  Eventually you find which slides are responsible and can then resolve the issue.

I didn't mention upgrading because I never thought that it might corrupt my project. What I did is that I opened my Cp8 project with Cp9 and I saved it so it was converted to Cp9. Now it can't be opened with Cp8 anymore. I think it's hard to find the corrupted components in my project because I have 270 slides in it.

Thank you very much RodWard for your help.

Hello RodWard again,

I have just discovered the main reason of the problem. It is because of the conversion of the project from Adobe Captivate 8 to Caprivate 9. Now, I can't go back to version 8 of my prject anymore.

Ungrouping the slides didn't resolve the problem. I still don't know what causes the crash exactly. Can it be from the theme, learning interactions, pictures, or gifs,...?

OK.  You did not previously mention anything about upgrading from Cp8 to 9.

Is it possible you were trying to add Cp8 slides to a Cp9 project?  Or perhaps there was some Cp8 component that ended up being corrupted by the upgrade.

Here is a copy of the problem from my Event viewer. I am sorry  it is in French, but it may give you an idea about the source of the problem.

I will try the steps you described and I will let you know the results. Many thanks.

Thank you so much for your clear guidances

My default folder locations are pointing to  local folders too.

My project files are about 200Mo to 300Mo each and contain grouped slides which I made in other seperated projects. I recently cleaned the cach but the problem persists.

I have tried many possibilities: I created a new project and copy and paste my slides into it, I tried to delete fonts, I also tried to use onother computer but the problem is still not resolved. I wonder if I can prevent the application from making those automatic backups from the registry or something.

Thanks a lot for your precious help.

200 to 300 megabyte project files are quite large, but that in itself is not usually enough to crash Captivate if your system has sufficient resources.  Have you tried opening the Windows Task Manager and then watch the Resources Monitor as Captivate is working to see if you can spot where it crashes?  This may tell you whether your system is running out of RAM or fileswap space when this issue occurs.

I'm not certain that the fact Captivate tries to create a backup file when it crashes is the problem here.  I think your issue may be triggered by something that you have in your project.

I'm interested in the fact that you say you have some "grouped slides" which originated in other separate projects.  It's possible there is something in these slides that is causing your issue.  Try UNGROUPING these slides and republishing / saving the project, to see if that fixes the issue.

You could also try HIDING small groups of slides (starting with these 'grouped slides' you refer to) and then republishing to see if you can narrow down which slides are causing the issue.

The issue you mention can sometimes be due to permissions that are in effect on the folder where your project and backup files live.

Are you ONLY working on CPTX files that reside in a folder on your own computer hard drive?  Or are you perhaps working on project files that are on a network LAN somewhere?

OK.  Good.

I should also add that you need to make sure your default folder locations in Preferences are also ONLY pointing to folders located on your local hard drive.

How large are these project files?  Perhaps your system is running out of resources when trying to do a backup and save.

Also, how long is it since you Cleared the Cache (via the button in Preferences)?

You can dig down into the Adobe Captivate install folder in Program Files and there you will find a folder called Utils inside of which there is a CleanPreferencesWin.bat file (CleanPreferencesMAC for MAC users) and if you double-click this file it will reset your Preferences folder, no matter where it is currently set up to be.  This is by far the easiest way to reset your Preferences folder.  If you find yourself needing to do this regularly, create a shortcut to this CleanPreferences file and stick the shortcut on your desktop somewhere.
