FWIW, I use an Andrea Electronics USB NC 7100 headset mic and generally am very pleased with the end result.

If there are faults with the voice over, it's usually my voice's fault, not the mic.

In general, I agree with Rick, especially regarding the failure of so many (it seems) USB mic configurations. I personally use a headset mic and have no problem at all with "pops" or external noise - of course, I control the environment to the extent I can by closing doors, shutting down machinery and so on.

The big sales point of the headset mic (for me) is that it is very easy to position it at exactly the same position (relative to my lips) every time I use it, allowing me to easily eliminate "breathing" sounds ... this also gives me excellent control of the volume, even if I leave and come back another day to finish (which is a big "No No" by the way).

While I don't want to rain on the parade of all the audiophiles out there, I personally think they are nuts unless their audience has speaker systems of sufficient quality to hear the difference.

Most of my work is either done for corporate clients who are on a LAN and listening without any speakers at all, or on the other end - "public" students who are participating in my tutorials on the web and who probably don't know how to plug their speakers in, anyway. Very few of my end-users have concert-quality systems, in any case.

Just to pop a note in here, I am totally with the 'real mic' sound. I use an MXL 992 which is not a very expensive mic, but it is a large diaphram, quiet, good sounding mic. I have a pop filter as well. I can not stand the head set mics as they are noisy, pickup breathing like crazy, and do not give good tone. My problem with Captivate, (which I was coming to this forum to see if per chance they are gonna fix it with 2.0) is that it did not detect my Edirol USB Audio Capture UA-25. I tried using my Samson mixer into my Sony VAIO's built-in sound card, but Captivate didn't like that sound card either. There are several posts regarding this as well. Bottom line here, (and believe it or not I'm not venting about Captivate not working with my stuff) get the best large diaphram mic you can afford and a pop filter. Also, I suggest you not use one of those table top stands, but do what the pros do and get a boom stand that screws to your desk. I have two of the same mics and two of the stands. Works great for interviews as well as other stuff I do. That's my .02

    Hello Alex,

Just to be clear, I record all the narration, split it into separate audio files and then import those into each of the relevant slides in my Captivate projects. This, I have found to be the most productive way to work with audio in Captivate, but that is just my personal preference.

    Mark,

Could you elaborate a bit more on how one would use a third party app
    and synch all the slides?
I don't see an option within Captivate that would allow that while
recording slides. Or am I missing something.

what's the best budget mic set?
    October 4, 2006
    Hello Alex,
Historically, I have used a Plantronics Audio 60 Stereo PC Headset. I did try the USB style setup but the quality of sound got back was appalling. If you intend to use Captivate’s built-in audio recording feature then this should be Ok.

Personally, I do not use the built-in audio recorder I use a third party audio application with a behinger audio mixer and Sure SM 58 microphone.

    Regards,
    Mark
