Question

Find and replace state text

I have a large project with multiple buttons for navigation. These buttons are added individually on each slide.

I'm translating this into a new language and have been using the export captions combined with find and replace to do the heavy lifting of translating the bulk of the content. I've just noticed that all my buttons have the text correctly replaced but not on the rollover state. So when previewing the project the rollover changes the button from one language to the old one.

In find and replace there is a specific ability to select rollover states in the dropdown but this finds 0 results when searching.

1. Is find and replace broken or am I misunderstanding why the rollover states are listed in the dropdown?

2. Please tell me there is some other easy way to bulk replace state text for smartshapes.

Thanks!

Just wanting to check something here about what you are doing.

You say you are translating this Captivate project into another language.  But you do not mention anything about using the normal method of exporting the captions and text out to an MS Word doc for translation.  If you do that and then reimport the translated document back into Captivate, it normally also allows you to translate any text held in button states.

So, are you aware of this method of localising Captivate projects into different languages?

@RodWard You may have missed it, but the OP did use the export/import workflow to Word for the project. However I understand whey Find/replace was preferred for the buttons, since the possibility to have buttons on the master slide or timed for the rest of the project was not used. Buttons were added to each slide. If you use the import/export workflow that would mean having to translate the label multiple times, whereas Find/replace can do it in bulk. However there is indeed a problem with that workflow depending on when the the label was added, for the rollover (and down) states.

Of course you could use Find/Replace in the Word document, but same problem will occur for buttons as I explained.

Not sure if I understand your question correctly. Localisation could use improvements for sure.

    Just checked this out:

    • Created a shape button with the label 'Next', same label in Normal, Rollover and Down
    • Used Find & Replace, used All styles, and replaced by 'Volgende' and text was replaced in the three states.

Do you want a different text in Rollover from the one in Normal?

    Hi,

Thanks for trying that. That's exactly what I'm trying to do only my rollover states don't update.

I just found that if I click through to states for one of the buttons then right click on rollover and choose "reset state" it fixes the text. I'm thinking the file must be corrupt?

I wanted to double-check because I had some intuition about the reason for your problems. It is not sure at all that the project is corrupt.

Probably the shape button was created this way:

    1. First activated as button
    2. Then the label was added.

In that case the Find&Replace will not replace the Rollover label. However if you use this workflow (which is mine, because I know that the workflow described above can lead to problems):

    1. Add the label to the shape before
    2. activate it as a button

In that case the Find&Replace acts as I described in my first answer.

Do not ask me WHY? I don't have an idea, just knew since a while that the first workflow has caused me problems in the past.
