Question

Flash.ocx and Vista?

I'm using Captivate 1.x and published the file as a standalone .exe. Works fine on XP machines, but on Vista we get the message: "This program requires flash.ocx which is no longer included in this version of Windows".

Searching the Adobe site I see that only Flash Player 9 and up is supported in Vista. I'm wondering if this is the problem? Presumably Captivate 1 used a pervious version of the Flash Player?

Also if you use the swf format you play this in IE AND HAVE IE's boarder and tools bars which prevents it showing full screen, unless I am mistaken.

So the next question is what is the advantage of using a Captivate .exe over a .swf file? I thought the .exe had everything it needed, but apparently not if it attempts to install the Flash Player. The .swf has a bit smaller file size which is a slight advantage. We deliver the file on CD. The idea was if a person did not happen to have the Flash Player (and did not have internet access) - something that does come up sometimes, then the .exe would work. Seems like that is not really the case. I'm not seeing the advantage of the .exe format.

    Hi again

I believe the advantage is that with the .EXE format, sure a player is installed. But only enough of it to run the movie. Nothing is left behind afterwards.

Thanks for the suggestion Rick. It looks like right-clicking the .exe and selecting "Run As Administrator" will solve the problem. I don't see why a self contained .exe should need administrator priviledges though.

    Hi again Esch

I'm guessing it's because even though the .EXE is self contained, it attempts to install the Flash Player as described in the following Technical Note: Click here to read the Technical Note

    Hi Esch

I seem to recall that Captivate 1 only needed Flash 6 and up. So I would think that it would work fine, even on a newer version of the Flash player. Have you tried installing Flash plugin to see? I seem to also recall that recent versions of Windows don't come automatically preinstalled with ability to play Flash content.

    Just a thought... Rick
