Flash Player Version

I was just wondering what the benefit of publishing to FlashPlayer Version 9 vs. Version 7 is. We distribute training to users that have Windows 2000 all the way to Windows Vista and I want to make sure I am publishing correctly. They play the training on their PCs. The don't access it over the Internet. We just upgraded to Captivate 3.0.

    I don't claim to know a lot about various versions, but I did discover that if I include a text entry box in which a specific letter of the alphabet is the trigger, it would work only inconsistently if I published using Flash Player 7, but if I published using Flash Player 8 it seemed to work consistently. So I assume there was something in triggering that text entry box that works in 8 but not 7.

    From what little I know about Flash Player, the later versions are preferred since they have better security features. I think Flash Player 9 is indeed the first version to support Actionscript 3, as Rick mentioned, but as yet Captivate does not seem to make use of that.

    The flip side is that earlier is better for us as Captivate developers since targeting later versions of Flash Player may require users to update their installed version, which is at best a nuisance and at worst, an impossible task for the user alone. My workplace is a prime example... most of our users don't have the security permissions to install software, so they'd be unable to access my content until our PC support guys get around to updating the Flash player.

    With that in mind, I'd say publish to the earliest version you can. I trust Adobe knows the minimum version required for their built-in functionality to work, so unless you've inserting custom Flash widgets that require a later version of Flash Player, you're much better off going with the oldest version possible.

    Hi Jerilyn

    I was watching this thread with bated breath in the vain hopes that someone would pick it up and give us something useful. I've asked many different resources (including Adobe) and as yet am empty handed.

    Logically, one might think that if you selected the lowest player version, you would have to forego certain features. I would expect that some dialog might be seen that politely advises upon publishing something along the lines of: You have selecte Flash Player 7 for your output. The following features aren't supported by this version of the player.

    * Rollover Slidelets
    * Question Pools with Random Question Slides

    But everything seems to fully work regardless of the player version selected.

    I did have one person suggest that perhaps it might be tied to the Actionscript version if exporting to Flash. But I don't go there quite yet, so I cannot say.

    I'm still hopeful that some bright soul will pop in here to enlighten us!

    Sincerely... Rick

    I was under the impression there were issues with security holes with previous versions of flash and only the most current version addresses these problems.

    Also, keep in mind that if you work for any government or educational institute, then flash player 7 would probably fall short of their basic security requirements.
