Forced linear navigation in TOC (Captivate 5)

So far there is a lot to love about Captivate, but one seemingly insignificant issue might prevent us from taking the plunge: the inability to force linear slide navigation with the Table of Contents (TOC).

Forget about why we need forced linear navigation (it's a client thing).

Placing NEXT and PREVIOUS buttons on each page satisfies the linear navigation concept, but that means we cannot use the TOC for navigation. The TOC allows only 2 navigational modes: random access to all slides in any order, or no navigation at all (just a display of slide names). The TOC is a wonderful template component for many reasons (shows program duration, shows information organization, allows review of previous information, etc.), so we really don’t want to exclude it.

I’ve scoured the blogs and found incredibly cumbersome workarounds, like using incremented variables and associated comparison scripts to allow navigation, but that makes so many tasks truly tedious and error-prone (like adding a single slide to the middle of the presentation).

Articulate Presenter and Adobe Presenter both have a single check box which enables this functionality for the entire project. One would think Captivate has it as well.

Am I missing something?

    Hi there

I don't believe you are missing any setting. I don't believe there is any setting that governs this behavior.

Aside from the workarounds you already seem to be aware of, I would encourage you to submit a Wish Form to alert the development team to this desired setting. If they receive enough requests, it will likely appear in an update or new version.

My guess is that this hasn't been much of an issue to this point or we would already have such a feature built in.

Link to the Wish Form is in my sig.

    Cheers... Rick

Thanks for at least settling the issue, Rick. I can stop searching for the answer.

I did indeed submit a feature request, as you suggested.

And I confirmed with my technology training manager that we can't consider purchasing a tool that doesn't have that feature (most of our training is federal compliance-related; we have to prove our learners visited each page).

Wow this is disappointing.  We have similar requirements on some projects.  I wish the product management team would simply buy a copy of Articulate, and ensure all major features are replicated in CP. At least I don't have to track this one down in the future.   Thanks
