Question

Global changes to the styles crashing Captivate

Hi,

I tried to change the global styles (Captivate 2017 / Mac OS X El Capitan) so that I don't have to do it every time I do a simulation for the same project, which does not load the custom project styles.  Now the default styles have disappeared and every time I open the styles form a project, Captivate crashes. I just can't work anymore and I'm starting to get very frustrated....

I contacted technical support, and they indicated in might be my user account.

I already reinstalled, cleaned the cache, cleaned the preferences, created another user and the issue replicates in the same way. The issue reproduces itself with any user.

Don't know what else to try. For the moment, just working without using text captions, so that I can advance with my work.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am not sure to understand really. Do you want to go back to the situation before changing 'object styles'? Which theme are you using? Is it a custom theme or one of the default themes?  You can restore a default theme. All object styles are part of a theme. The themes you are using are stored in Public Documents (on Windows, on Mac it is another folder, shared?) under Adobe\eLearning Assets. That folder 'Layouts' is a copy of the original folder which you find under the installation folder of Captivate in the Gallery. If you know which theme you used, you can overwrite that theme in the Public documents by the original theme from the Gallery. I'm sorry not to be able to give you the exact paths for a Mac.

I'm working on a project where all styles are custom, according to the requirements of my employer. I have to work with custom styles and a custom theme.  The project has lots of simulations, but every time you record a simulation from within that project, the custom styles are not loaded. So what I did according to the Captivate documentation is to close all projects and open the preferences to globally change the styles for all projects. As soon as did that, all styles disappeared, and not just that, but now when I'm in any project, opening the styles manager crashes Captivate.  Its practically unusable, unless you avoid opening the styles manager, which is what I'm doing now so that I can continue working. I will deal with the styles when I find a solution to this.

If found the eLearning Assets forlder in Users/Shared/Adobe/eLearning Assets, but I don't see any Layouts folder.

Not sure what else I can do.

Custom styles are part of a custom theme. Same for Recording Defaults. Did you set those Defaults up, because the styles used during capture are part of the set up?

I would never change object styles globally, but just apply that custom theme when starting a project. If you have to do several projects with the same theme, you can indicate it as the Default theme. All has been explained in the articles below (Theme article has links to more articles about Theme).

Timeline, quizzes and themes are THE stumbling blocks for any CP starter. Each basic training for Captivate should focus on them, which is not happening at all because a lot of trainers do not have my opinion (based on almost a decade of answering questions on these forums). Maybe you are bumping also on one of them?
