Glossary will not Preview

I have 11 lessons that I've created in CP. Each had a glossary with new words. I then decided that I'd rather have a cumulative glossary so that it always has all of the words from the previous lessons. Starting from the first lesson, I copied and pasted the glossary into each lesson, adding the new words as I went. (Copy, paste, add new words, copy that version, paste into next lesson, add new words, etc etc).

I did not even think about looking at it, and now only the first glossary from lesson #1 works! When I preview the glossary in all of the subsequent lessons, none of them will display. Oh this is a big problem, and so much work put into doing it!! Help!! Any ideas?? (FYI, tested in IE and Chrome). Also tested creating a new lesson, adding a glossary, copying that glossary, pasting it into a new fake lesson and it worked. All of the lessons were initially created before the new update from few weeks ago.

Thanks,

Tanya

I have found that it's a mistake to add words one-by-one to the Glossary interactions.  The best way is to upload the entire content of the Glossary via an XML file in the format shown in the interaction itself.

That's what I do now.  In fact, I only usually update the Glossaries in each CPTX just near the end of the project.  I've never really seen the point of having some glossaries only have certain words.  I feel that could potentially be confusing to the learners. A Glossary to me is sort of like a dictionary for the entire course.  So my preference has been to just have one XML file that I upload into all of the Glossaries so that they are all identical.  It's also going to be a lot less maintenance this way (as you have found).

I use an Excel spreadsheet to build the XML file.  The spreadsheet has extra columns that contain the necessary XML code.  I'm happy to share one with you if you ping me a message from the Contact form on my website at Infosemantics.com.au

Thanks for your reply; I understand what you're saying, but my approach has been to start my glossary with whatever new words are applicable, and then I build upon the glossary with each lesson, so it includes all of the previous words and then the new words as my lessons are done in order.

CP9 should be able to do this; it should work as they present it, and my issue is that previous glossaries I created are not not visible after the update.

Ahhh...you hadn't previously mentioned anything about having updated Captivate.

Your issue then may be that after updating Captivate you should have followed the directions for deleting certain folders that need to be refreshed after updates.  Your Glossary Interaction may also need to be updated to be compatible with the new Captivate version.

Hopefully it will be possible to update the widget without having to remove and replace it.  But if that DOES end up being necessary, then it means you're back to square one about having to re-enter all of your Glossary terms one by one.  On the other hand, if you use my method, you could have a glossary spreadsheet for each module that only includes the terms that apply to it, and then you would be able to restore your Glossary in seconds.  It's up to you.
