Help - Using Robodemo 3

The company I am working for is currently using Robodemo 3. They have not upgraded yet because basically until now the help system that is using their robodemo files was not maintained as closely as it should have been. Now that we are paying closer attention to the help system we would like to get a newer version of Robodemo. I have found a version for sale (unopened in retail box) of Robodemo 5, but before purchasing would just like to verify I will be able to open and work on my RD 3 projects in RD 5. I know that I cannot open RD 3 files in Captivate, although I can open the RD 3 file in RD 3, create a backup, then open the backup in Captivate, however I lose my caption formatting and any settings on highlight or click boxes.

We have 428 RD 3 movies and would like to not have to go into each one and have to manually update each caption and highlight or click box.

Thank you for all of your help

Partially correct at best. Opening a FCZ (backup) file will not corrupt caption formatting or anything else. Nor will it change click-box settings and so on. To continue, Captivate can open *.RD as well as *.FCZ files.

Regardless of what features might give you trouble, I strongly sugest you upgrade to Captivate (version 2 will be released in just a week or two) because it is faster to work with, more powerful, more stable ... you know the usual things you notice when using a software that is six generations newer.

There is one other reason to upgrade to Captivate: I may be the last person left who knows RoboDemo at the "expert" level (especially the early versions) - and I'm not going to support it any more myself - any version. It's time to change my friend. Since RoboDemo 3, the world has moved on. . . and so should we.

"RoboDemo 5", in a box or not, is worth exactly *nothing*. The company no longer exists, there is no support available, and the product ws never close to being as good as Captivate.

Hi AE and welcome to our community

In addition to fellow Adobe Community Expert Larry's excellent advice, I'd like to address something I'm inferring from the initial post.

In your post, you said: Now that we are paying closer attention to the help system we would like to get a newer version of Robodemo.

This would almost seem to indicate you believe you can only use RoboDemo to create or update files for your help system. I'm assuming you are using RoboHelp to manage the help system? I just wanted to add that Captivate files will work just fine with the latest version of RoboHelp.

    Cheers... Rick
