How do I delete a user variable other than the variable interface?

Hello,

I am currently dealing with a corrupt variable inside a Captivate 9 file. This variable is unused within the project. When I attempt to publish the project, I receive an error message saying "Swf Compilation Failed." The variable name is "COUNT_INT_NEG". When I attempt to delete this unused variable, Captivate crashes every time. I can't even change the initial value without Captivate failing.

I am seeking a back door approach to deleting this variable.

You might be able to leave the variable behind if you create a new blank project of the same dimensions as this one and copy all of your slides over in small groups.  Keep watching the Variables dialog in the new project to see if the variable appears at any point,.  If indeed it isn't being used then it shouldn't appear.

I found the answer to the problem of why certain user variables were causing my file to crash. It was not the variable name, it was the description entry. Soemhow, when text for the variable desctiption was copied and pasted from a spreadhseet, certain characters within the description were skewed. Once I deleted the description, I was able to delete the variable.

    Problem solved.

    thanks everyone!

    Can you update the variable?

You DO have backups turned on?

    My suggestions:

Change the value, change the name, save. Attempt to delete.

OP wants to delete the variable, and told it is unused. OP cannot change the default value. It just happens, with this first version that has Delete Variables on board: sometimes a variable cannot be deleted because it is 'used' by an unknown event.

Sorry, I missed the comment that "I can't even change the initial value."

If that variable is not used (Usage in Variables dialog box), cannot you just ignore it? It often happens that a variable cannot be deleted for some reason (didn't find the logic yet) to me as well.

Or is the project crashing at other moments as well? Are you sure the variable label is not used for another item?
