Question

How do I set the default message and style of a 2nd or 3rd Failure Message?

Hi,

I can easily set the message and style of the first Failure Message in my Master slides but there doesn't seem to be a way to do this for the 2nd and 3rd messages.

Can someone please point me in the right direction or confirm you can't?

Many thanks!

Brett

    Thanks Paul and Lilybiri.

    I'm now manually adjusting all 2nd messages.

    What's interesting is that a few of my slides came through from the GIFT file with their #Messages attached to the responses. The messages were squashed together at the right side of the slide and I already had my default Failure message set up at the bottom of the screen so I ended up deleting them. Here's the syntax for one of them that worked:

    ::Xerography – Basic Level::

    The purpose of the Clean station is to (tick all correct answers): {

    =Remove all traces of toner, carrier and paper dust off the belt, ready to be imaged again.

    ~Send the waste elements to the Waste Developer Container. #Sorry, the waste material is sent to the Waste Dry Ink container. Please try again.

    ~Keep the belt polished and free from scratches. #Sorry, this would be ideal but not practical. Please try again.

    ~Apply a static charge to the belt ready for Magenta imaging. #Sorry, that job belongs to the AC Charge Discorotron. Please try again. }

    However, I was curious about why some showed the failure responses and others didn't when importing my GIFT file. So I had a play and think I've found that if the Multiple Choice questions are detected as Multiple Answers, the failure messages just don't import. If they are seen as single answer questions then they appear, but if you then changed the question to Multiple Answer then the messages disappear... turn Multiple Answers OFF and they re-appear.

    Now, if you were to build a Single Answer question slide yourself (without the aid of a GIFT file), I can't see a way to manually attach a Failure Message to a specific answer. Is that possible or can it only be done through the GIFT file?

    Anyway, I feel I'm a small step closer to understanding it better.

    Chz, Brett

    You can do Advanced Answer feedback that is specific to each incorrect answer. This is different from 1st, 2nd, or 3rd wrong answer feedback. Advanced answer feedback is placed in the properties panel of each individual answer.

    One point to add to Paul's answer:  The Advanced Answer Option is only available for one type of Quiz Question.  The Multi-Choice radio button type quiz question.  It's not available for Multiple Answer check box questions, and (oddly) you cannot even find it available for True / False quiz questions, although you can achieve a workaround by reducing a multi-choice question down to two answers.

    Adobe Captivate only has the one default failure caption style, however, you could create your own object style that could be applied as you need it when creating 2nd and third caption styles. Watch this video if you are not sure how to create your own object styles:

    AFAIK it is not possible to change the default text in second Failure messages, nor using the GIFT format.

    This is not controlled from the Master Slides.

    If you want each failure message to have a distinct style you will need to set up different Object Styles using the Object Style Manager and manually apply these styles to the second and third failure captions that you see on the individual quiz slides.

    Thanks for helping Rod,

    Hmmm, I should have been a bit more clearer. The colour of the message panel and text aren't the problem. The first response I have already has my preferred style applied and when I activate a second or third Failure Message, it also appears in the same style but I can't find a way to set the size/positioning so they each appear where I want them (ie. in the same spot).

    I also can't see how to set the wording for the 2nd and third text messages. I know where to go to set the default first message.

    I just created 17 slides and changed them to have 2 Fail Messages (I wish I could do this as a default for all slides) and had to manually alter the 2nd message for each slide (text/size/position). I have many more quizzes to work on so would like to automate this as much as possible.

    BTW, if I want to add my preferred Failure message (one or more) in my GIFT file is the following syntax correct to best apply them:

    ::iGen Feeders – Basic Level::

    What does the Feeder Environment Control system manage? (tick all that apply) {

    =Temperature.

    =Humidity.

    ~Paper dust. #Sorry, this is incorrect. Please Try one more time. #Sorry, this is also incorrect. Please move to the next question. }
