How to remove a Certificate widget and slides?

I need to remove a certificate widget. The new LMS we use has certificate build in. How do I do this correctly? 

If I just delete the name entry slide and the certificate slide, when I republish the course, the course freezes and loses the bookmarking.

Do I have to remove the variables too?

Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

You'll have to use the Usage button on the variables dialog to start with: see where the variables on the certificate are used. You have to break all usage. Then you'll be able to delete the variables, which will probably also cripple advanced actions.

Why not just hide those slides, and republish?

Thank you for your promt answer.
I tried to hide the certificate slide but it says there are 83 dependencies on the slide. I attached a screenshot.
