Question

How to reset a course in LMS after it has been marked as complete?

Hi there,

I'm working on developing a series of modules that will be uploaded to a number of different LMS's. One of the challenges that users will face is not being able to take the course as a refresher after they've passed it. So for instance, they might take a module today, complete the quizes, and final evaluation and pass, thereby marking the module as complete. However, if they want to take the course again 6 months down the road, they are not able to do so.

Has anyone been able to address this easily? Is there a "reset" button either in Captivate 6 or in the LMS that allows the previous status of the course to be wiped clean?

Here some details that might help:

  • Captivate version 6
  • LMS examples being used are Cornerstone and HealthStream
  • SCORM 1.2 package includes the following separate files:
    • Part 1a - Content and quiz (score not reported)
    • Part 1b - Simulation (interaction not reported)
    • Part 2a - content and quiz (score not reported)
    • Part 2b - Simulation
    • Part 3 - Final Evaluation (score reported)

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

Thank you for reaching Adobe Community.

Could you please tell me which LMS exactly you are using? Try a free LMS called Scorm Cloud.

Also what exactly the LMS's are saying or are they going to the last slide of the project, if the latter one is happening then make sure you have Never Send Resume Data as checked under the LMS Advanced Settings.

Thanks!

Thank you for your response. Examples of the LMS include Cornerstone and HealthStream.

I actually haven't seen the behaviour in the LMS myself but I've been told through 3rd party that this is what happens:

A user will go through an entire module, answer all of the questions until they get a passing grade. This changes the status of the module to "Complete" in the LMS. What I'd like to know is, if a user wants to take a module again, from scratch at a later point, how can it be reset so that it looks like they're taking it for the first time with no resutls recorded?

This kind of thing is entirely controlled by the LMS functionality and the way your LMS Admin person sets up the rules for the way a given course is handled in that LMS.  It has little to do with your course content built by Captivate or any other tool.

Many good LMSs have provision to allow the user to launch a course as either For Credit or Not For Credit, (sometimes referred to as Review or similar).  Check if your LMS has this.  If it does, then your users should be able to select that option when reviewing course content after completing it.

If your LMS has NO ability to allow the user to view the content again after completing it, without forcing them to redo the entire course again, then you may need to look at providing a copy of the course in another location external to the LMS to enable users access to the same content.  I had to do that at a client site recently by placing a copy of all LMS courses on the company intranet.
