Trying to publish a captivate file to LMS and during the process of sending PENS notification a dialog box with "HTTP/1.1 404 object not found" pops up. Can anyone tell me what this means? What am I missing? Thanks in advance.

Erik,

PENS is a notification process. The intent...

- Developer configures Captivate for their specific LMS or LCMS (L/CMS).
This is mostly a URL that the PENS commands are sent to
- When publishing, Captivate uploads an LMS package to an FTP site or could
otherwise copy the file to some location on the file/server. NOTE: The
package can be referenced via an FTP or HTTP reference
- Captivate notifies L/CMS that the package is available (and Captivate
provides information about how to access this package, including the URL,
id/passwords to access, etc)
- The L/CMS reviews the package information (not the package but whether the
information can be parsed) and immediately returns a response that indicates
whether the package seems valid or not
- The L/CMS downloads the package
- The L/CMS imports the package
- The L/CMS notifies the developer / administrator the package is available

Tim,

It's at step 4, above, that I'd assume the HTTP 404 error is returning...
Did you configure Captivate for PENS? Does your L/CMS support PENS?

Regards,

Andrew

I've never used PENS and, frankly, not quite sure what it's all about.
I'd imagine that there needs to be some application "server side" that
needs to be able to handle the PENS requests - kinda like with FTP; you
can't just FTP to a machine that's not running an FTP server.

So, does your LMS have any sort of PENS support? If so, then look there
for the reason for the 404.

If your LMS does not support PENS, then you don't want to use that
option! More likely, just publish the Captivate file as a .zip file then
upload it into the LMS via whatever web-based interface it likely provides.

Hi Tim

Generically speaking, 404 errors typically mean that a page doesn't exist or an address is invalid. How it may relate to PENS is beyond me.

Erik? Andrew? Bueller? Can any of you shed more light?

Cheers... Rick
