Question

Image is distorted when using the Jigsaw Puzzle Interaction

Hi,

I am resizing my newly downloaded image (1000 x 705) from Shutterstock using Apple's Preview function. Of course, when I click Keep Porportion, I can never get it to either 300 x 300 or 400 x 400. Nonetheless, I insert this image in my puzzle. When the puzzle is completed and the resulting image displays, the image is distorted.

When I uncheck Keep Porportion, and force the size to either 300 x 300 or 400 x 400, the resulting image is still distorted. I've tried everything. My client will not sign off on this project until I get this resolved.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

I am running Mavericks OS (Mac) and Captivate 7.0.1.0237.

Hi,

Thanks to everyone who posted with helpful suggestions. Since I don't have experience with, or a license to, Photoshop, I found my own workaround. I should mention that did I use Mac's Preview function to resize each image (Tools > Adjust Size), but I still didn't get the quality I was looking for upon completion of the quiz.

Here are the steps for my workaround.

1) For the Jigsaw Puzzle widget, I disabled the Success feedback.

2) I created a Standard Advanced Action that, upon successful completion of the jigsaw puzzle, shows the original image with high resolution and a correct feedback caption box that I manually created. It also shows my Next button and hides my Skip button (added to the slide upon entracnce, allowing the learner to skip the puzzle if they so choose). Note that I had to put the original image, correct feedback caption, and Next button above the widget in the timeline so that these items would cover up the low rez image that displays upon completion.

This worked beautifully and gave me the results I was looking for. No more worrying about resizing images and getting poor resolution. See attached screenshots for details.

Hope this is helpful for others.

The image has to be a square. Either you'll have to use a graphics program as Evan points out, or you can crop the image in Captivate as well: insert it first on a slide, you'll see the Image Edit dialog and there is a crop button.

If you don't want to crop, but to add pixels the only way is with a graphics program, not necessary Photoshop.

If you have Photoshop to edit images, the fix to this is simple. Open the image in Photoshop, set the canvas size to be square (for example I had an image at 2000x2000). Make sure the layer is editable, and then delete any color or what not from the excess space. Save the file as a PNG. The Puzzle maker will automatically recognize it as a PNG and not use the space that is transparent. If you need more help, send me a PM and I can edit the picture for you if necessary.
