Question

Indexing or Table of Content

I just completed my first movie and everyone loved it including the clients. It was a hit.

There is however a request from a few clients asking if there is a way to index or correlate the slides so that if they don't want to view the entire video they can view excerpts by selecting which area of the movie they wich to view and have the movie show only that section.

Thanks for your help,
Veronica.

Good conversation, to which I'll add my 2 cents. Veronica, your best bet is to make the "to index or not to index" decision before you create the first movie in your series . . . note the word "series" because I really agree with both Terrence and CNA about keeping the movies short - for all the reasons stated and others. Your original design should have a storyboard of what you will be capturing for each of the several (many?) movies (chapters) in the story (book).

Click this link to view one way of designing what you are describing . Notice the "index" is actually a captured "blank" area to the left of the displayed content, and is available on every slide in the movie. So navigation to any part of the movie - or even to other movies - is available at any time during the viewing of each.

Hope this makes sense to you. I have other thoughts on creating a TOC or Index but my examples are all based on the concept of building the navigation area into the recording of the original movie - and all that follow, in that series (think "template").

    Have a great day guys!

    Hi there Larry,

I got some great suggestions from the three of you.

I like the look of the short presentation. This is actually exactly what I am looking for, having the navigation area show up to the left on every slide.

Did you build that index area using Menu Builder? You said it was a captured blank area, can you explain how that was done?

I am still quite new to Captivate and is learing as I go along. In the meantime I will play around with it to see what I come up with.

Your suggestions and ideas are greatly appreciated.

    Veronica.

We choose the route of splitting the movie into logical parts - this also greatly imporved performance: the training appears more responsive, and we can support more concurrent users.

We have chosen to publish two versions of our movies. One version runs a training module from start to finish for a seemless experience, the other version runs each parts as a stand alone movie. We have used simple HTML as the main menu becuase we are not using a LMS. We can use the browsers built in history function to let users know which parts they have completed.

You have a couple of options. Either split your movie into several stand-alone components then use MenuBuilder to create an selective list. Also, you could create a first screen with buttons with jumps to specific slides that would be appropriate entry points. However, you'll need to build an appropriate "Return to Manin Menu" option at the end of each segment otherwise the movie will continue to the next segment inline.
