Library Question

If i record a project and eventually do not use a few slides and delete them, why does the library still contain the deleted items? This seems to cause a problem with file sizes being larger then they actually need to be due to containing un-needed items.

I think it is a big problem. The trick to copy the project into a blank project cleans the file ok. I personaly created a template based on an existing project that had a lot of gremlins and these new projects ended-up with a lot of MB with few slides...

The problem by copying the the project into a new blank presentation is that does not copy the Quiz and ou have to redo it all, at least in Cap2 and saving as a new name made very litle difference to me. The developers should realease a patch to address this for all version of Captivate

Good point Steve. I would remind everyone that the "large file" being discussed is the project (source) file, not the SWF (output) file.

I mention this, not to say that saving space in the source file isn't important, but to put it into perspective; when the SWF begins to balloon, that is when I become concerned, not when the project file increases (I'll stop short of saying "who cares" about the size of the source file, but ...).

I tried what Steve mentioned and got some good results. I took a project, removed all 0 use items and saved to the original file name. The size of the file is 3392KB. I then saved to a new file name and the size is 1624KB. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?? The same # of slides, the same content, the same everything is in both files, why would one be larger than the other?

I understand that the source file size is not as important as the output file, but that doesn't mean that it is not an issue. Several of us do hundreds of projects a year using captivate, although the file size discrepency is small on each project, you start multiplying by the number of projects and that adds up quick

To elaborate more on this. I have a project with 12 slides. Current size is 1811KB. There are 5-6 backgrouds in the library that have a use count of 0. If i delete those backgrounds and then save, my file jumps up to 2000KB. In theory, if i remove something from a project, shouldn't my file size go down, not up?

    Hi Matt

I would agree with you that deleting from the library should make the file size decrease. I recall that Captivate 2 introduced the Library function. I also recall seeing others report the same behavior as you are reporting. Are you using version 2 or 3? If you are using 3, your report would seem to imply that the issue that we saw with 2 remains in version 3. I seem to also recall that you could shrink the project by opening a second instance of Captivate, creating a new project at the same dimensions as the existing one, then copying and pasting from one to the other.

I would also encourage you to report the behavior via the Bug Reporting link. You may do this by clicking here

    Cheers... Rick
