Question

Linking my intro movie to a menubuilder

Hi
I'm quite new to this, so my question may seem a little basic, but I'd like to link my menubuilder to an intro. Ultimately I am wanting to achieve an intro, leading into a menu which then picks up each relevant movie.

I've gone into Movie preferences/movie end options and selected Open URL or file and then selected my menubuilder, but nothing happens at the end, the movie just ends as normal and doesn't progress through to the menu.

I hope someone can help?

Thanks Julesy A

GLORY GLORY HALLELUJAH! Pardon my singing, but SUCCESS has been achieved. After weeks of possible technical solutions, guess what the answer is? Your file name cannot have a number in it. That's it. When I changed the name of the file from intro1 to introone - Shazaam! Thanks for everyone's attempts at solving this. Hope I didn't stress you out too much Rick. I've got one more item I'm going to post as a new topic that I've posted once before that I didn't solve, and that is, when you save the menu as an html file, it automatically positions it to the left and at the top of the internet explorer screen. In the html code, what can you add or change to position the menu in the center or middle?

Hey armcc5000, I had the same thought last week. When I take the path away and just leave the menubuilder file, it won't let me choose the file.

What type of files are you using? I think I have an idea but I'd like to test it first.

Hey Brock, surprised to see you still here, as I believe you bade us farewell as you were headed to use Camtasia...

At any rate, your post gave me pause. Made me wonder about your links not working. Particularly the bit about not being able to navigate to select. If this is the only way you are linking, this could likely be the total issue with your absolute VS relative linking issue.

Here is what I do. I don't normally use the dialogs to navigate to my files. I generally note their names and type the other movie name into the fields and leave it at that. After this, you simply ensure all the related movies are in the same folder location.

    Have you tried this approach?

    Rick,

Did you do all of this on the same computer? I can make all of that work too if I do it on the same computer I created it on, because even if the files are on CD on that computer, it looks for the absolute path and finds it. If I take that CD to another computer....No Go.

    Brock and/or Julesy,

This may be a stupid question and maybe you've tried this already, but when you do the Open URL or file option is the directory path still there? (I.E. C:\CaptivateStuff\Menubuilder1.html) If so try deleting that and just leaving your menubuilder file. Thats how I'm doing it between two EXE files, it might be different with other types of files but if you haven't tried it its diffently worth a shot.

Yeah, and I'm just going in circles in about 5 different forums. Nobody has any working answers.

    Hi Brock22

Okay, you say 5 different forums? Where else are you asking/seeking advice? Are you now talking about linking Captivate to Captivate or you still working and struggling with MenuBuilder? Or MenuBuilder and Captivate?

I just performed a small test linking from one Captivate movie to another via the End option. Seems to work fine. No absolute paths here. I tried confirming by moving both movies to a different drive letter. The first movie simply opened the second off the new drive. I then tried buring to CD. Before testing, I deleted the movies from anywhere else, just in case they would somehow be found or whatever. Again, worked just fine.

So can you tell us EXACTLY the steps you are following here? I'm thinking it simply has something to do with the way you have created your links.

    Cheers... Rick

I haven't committed any of it to CD yet, i'm just working from my local drive. I've put all the relevant files in the same folder too and exported the menubuilder as an exe.

I've also published my movie as an exe but when it finishes I'm just left with a blank screen, rather than it moving on to the menu.

I've just had another fiddle and if I link my movie to a URL it works, and if I link it to a flash movie it works, although it brings it up in another screen with a browser, which isn't what I want. It seems that the link isn't finding the exe. files. Trouble is, I want the whole thing in full screen and it seems only the exe file does that.

    Any ideas?

Ok - slight breakthrough , but as usual, it just throws up another problem.

I've got my intro movie to link to a menu and my menu to link to another movie. The only way I could get this to work is publishing my intro movie as exe linking it on movie end option to a flash movie (which is what i saved my menu as) and linking the menu item as an exe. When I "view output" after publishing my intro movie, I get my first movie full screen, moving into my menu (full screen) and then clicking on the menu item which displays as full screen - this is exactly what i wanted.

However, this only seems to work when I publish my intro movie and watch it from "view output". If I go to the file in my computer, or run the exe. it plays the first intro movie and then bombs out to a black screen.

So I step forward, 2 steps back!! Any ideas why this appears to run as required from view output but not from any other method?

Aha - I've sussed why it bombs - when I save the menu as a flash movie it saves it as a shoackwave flash object, so when you view output it picks it up. Strange thing is when you go to find it again, its gone!!! If i look in the folder (or elsewhere for that matter) for it, i can't find it, which is probably why the movie crashes out when it tries to find it. Question is, why isn't it holding the saved menu?????

Anyone any ideas on where my shockwave flash object keeps going?

Brock22 - I totally empathise with you, you seem to be having some similar problems as me

    I'm off for a beer ,

    Hi Jelesy A

    So many questions...

So what format is your MenuBuilder? How have you tested? Are all files on your local drive or on a CD? Or even on a LAN, the internet or an intranet? Do you end up with a browser window at the end of the movie?

    Cheers... Rick
