Menu Builder Links to Skins

Help!!!!! I've tried everything to get this Menu Builder to work with no luck. I have 9 lessons in a course and have published each lesson as a Flash (.swf) file. When I created the Menu Builder, I tried linking the menu items to the .swf skin files. That works fine in preview mode, but when I export the Menu builder project to either .exe or .swf, I get an error message. When I try linking the menu items to the .htm file, a blank screen appears in preview mode when clicking on the menu item. What am I doing wrong????? Please help! Thanks.

    Rick,
    I appreciate the time you spent reviewing and testing my files. However, I don't understand why the standard.js file was not in the mix. It was in the same folder as all the other files when I sent it to you. Also, I tried following each of the steps you described, and I still get a blank page when I click on the menu links. Creating a MenuBuilder project shouldn't be this difficult. I really have no more time for experiments at this point and am going back to Captivate 1. Thanks for trying to help with this project, but I'll be looking for other authoring software for my next project.

    Hi Cheryl

    Sorry to hear of your frustrations. I totally understand the need to be productive, hence your desire to switch back to Captivate 1.

    There is, however, possibly one little difference that you may not have noticed I said. That was the fact that I created a single new folder and exported the MenuBuilder output to the new folder. Prior to doing this, indeed the standard.js file was present where all the files were. It was only missing from the new folder.

    So you don't know of any known solutions?
    Thanks.

    And when is Captivate 3 going to be released?

    Hi again KTPUB

    That's the trick, isn't it? Knowing the solution.

    Sorry, but had I known of a solution, I'd most definitely have posted it. Unfortunately, for all the posts I've seen about the issue, I can't ever recall a solution being found and posted. The term "DIB" seems to imply "Device Independent Bitmap". So one might surmise that it has something to do with display settings. Some have even speculated that it is a dual monitor setting that affects things.

    As for Captivate 3 release dates? That one is anyone's guess. Adobe never has told anyone when a product is releasing. At least, not until they announce the date. Once that happens it's usually about a week before the product begins shipping. Maybe less.

    Cheers... Rick

    I can't even get MenuBuilder to open.
    I get a "Can't Allocate the DIB Handle" erro message many times.
    Thoughts anyone?

    Hi KTPUB

    Unfortunately, I've seen this issue reported many times. Although, it's been a long while since I've seen anyone report it!

    Cheryl, if you want, I'd be happy to take a look at your stuff and see what may be plaguing you. If you want to zip some stuff up and post it (you could use YouSendIt.com to do this. My E-Mail address is rstone75 (at) kc (dot) rr (dot) com.

    Cheers and happy Friday all... Rick

    Cheryl - I've been having problems with Menubuilder, too. I've tried everything suggested by Rick, but I keep getting messages saying "failed to open directory" when trying to save things, and address violation errors. Did you get anywhere with your problem?

    Hi Cheryl W and welcome to our community

    When you link from MenuBuilder, you need to ensure the following are in place.

    1. When you create the links, you probably point at the skin .SWF files. Point instead at the matching HTML container file. Note that after selecting a .SWF, if MenuBuilder sees a corresponding HTML file, it links to that instead anyway and advises you.

    2. After you create the links, make sure you place a check mark inside the check box labeled "Save file with project".

    3. When you look at your link in the field, I take the extra step of ensuring any and all pathing information has been removed. For example, it might look like this:

    C:\Downloads\chalkboard.htm

    So I remove the pathing info so it looks like this:

    chalkboard.htm.

    4. When you place the content where the user will view it, ensure all files are present. For example, your Captivate 2 files would include the following:

    * standard.js
    * MainMovie.SWF
    * MainMovie_skin.SWF
    * MainMovie.HTM

    Make sure *ALL* files are in the same folder.

    Thanks, Rick, but I have tried that. When I select the HTM file, the entire path is entered into the Link field. I then click save file with project, and the entire path is still there in the Link field. If I delete all but the file name.htm from the Link field, I get an error message External exception E06D7363. I have ensured that all files are present in the same folder. I must be doing something wrong somewhere along the line, but I'm stumped as to what it might be. I'm completely fed up with trying to make this work, and I'm ready to go back to Captivate 1 or look for better authoring software. Any recommendations?

    Hi again Cheryl

    Hmm, that's interesting. I've never personally encountered the issues you are citing. Out of curiosity, where exactly does your MenuBuilder project and the files live? Is it on your local C drive or are you trying to do this using a network share? If you are trying to do this on a network share, try moving everything to a folder on your local C drive and see if the issues resolve.

    If this works by taking that approach, you are then free to copy the resulting MenuBuilder output files to a network share if that's where you need them to be. Captivate (for sure) and MenuBuilder (Possibly/Probably) does not like it when you work with content while it is stored on a network drive.

    Cheers... Rick
